What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open bound book photographed from above against a dark gray background. The right-hand page, softly lit and slightly uneven, fills most of the frame; only a narrow sliver of the left page is visible along the edge. The support is vellum in warm ivory and beige tones, with cream highlights where light catches its surface. Long diagonal creases cross the lower half, smaller wrinkles gather near the corners, and faint brown spots and translucent stains mark its age. The edges are irregular and slightly darkened, and at the right side the stacked leaves of the volume create thin golden-brown lines. Nearly the whole page is covered with dense Greek handwriting in brown ink, arranged in regular lines that form a compact, orderly block. At the top there is a shorter heading line with small marks above some letters. Near the bottom, the writing changes: the letters become larger and more spaced, and a prominent capital initial projects slightly into the left margin. In the upper right corner, the number “154” appears in faint gray pencil. A small dark mark sits in the left margin near the large initial. No figures or colorful decoration appear on this page.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the block of text as a whole, almost like a woven fabric, before trying to follow any single line. Then drop down to the large initial near the bottom: that is where the rhythm of the page changes. Finally, look at the wrinkles, stains, and the penciled number, which reveal the parchment's long life as a physical object.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 154 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. The volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, written and painted with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks —symbols of the soul's immortality— and fountains of life. This particular page is mostly text, without figural illumination. Its specific scribe and illuminator are unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: in the upper right corner, the number “154,” written in modern pencil, sits almost a thousand years apart in writing technology from the medieval Greek ink just below it.

I love this page because it is not perfect and that tells its story. Look at the vellum in warm ivory and beige tones: it is not smooth, it has long diagonal creases, tiny wrinkles near the corners and very faint brownish spots. The light creates creamy highlights and even translucent areas from more than nine hundred years of use. Notice the uneven, slightly darkened edges, and on the right the stacked leaves with fine golden and brown lines. It is a book of 428 leaves that has survived a very long time.

For me this page is like a neatly ordered night sky. Almost all of it is covered by regular lines of Greek handwriting in brown ink forming a compact block, like aligned constellations. At the top there is a short line with little marks above some letters, like tiny guiding stars. Lower down the letters become larger and more spaced, and a large initial sticks out slightly into the left margin, like a brighter star marking a new beginning. It is a system to keep from getting lost while reading.

This book is open and looks like it has been open for a very long time. The right page takes up almost the whole view and on the left you only see a thin strip of the other page. It looks a bit wrinkly, as if someone folded it by accident, with pale spots and shiny bits where the light hits it. It is full of little brown letters that look like tiny ants lined up in rows. In the top right corner someone wrote 154 in pencil. Lower down there is a bigger letter that sticks out a little, as if it wants to say hi!
