What you would seeLo que verías
An open book photographed from above against a dark gray background, seen slightly at an angle. Only one page fills almost the entire frame; at the far right, a narrow sliver of the facing page is visible, and on the left, the stacked edges of many earlier leaves show as thin, uneven, cream-colored lines. The page is vellum, pale beige with darker, browned edges, small spots, stains, and a soft waviness that catches the light, especially near the lower left and along the gutter. The text, handwritten in Greek, occupies the upper right two-thirds of the page, leaving unusually wide empty margins below and to the left. The letters are small, dense, and cursive, written in brown ink in tight, fairly regular lines. At the top, a few lines in larger, reddish-orange script stand out, along with a faint, blurred horizontal band where a heading has faded or worn away. On the left edge of the text block there is a larger initial, darkened and partly surrounded by a brown stain. Tiny holes, specks, and discolorations are scattered across the blank parchment. There are no figures or illustrations on this page: its visual force comes from the rhythm of the script, the warmth of the aged skin, and the shadows that reveal the book's thickness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the wide, empty margins and then move into the dense block of writing, as if entering a quiet room. Notice the larger reddish lines at the top and the stained initial on the left: they are guides for a reader who already knew how to navigate the text. Finally, look at the uneven edges and shadows along the spine; they remind you that this is not a flat image, but an object that has been turned page by page.
ContextContexto
This is folio 162 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000-1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves written in Greek, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The museum notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page, however, is devoted almost entirely to text. Its author is unknown, and its exact date is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this page looks plain, in the full manuscript the openings of the Gospels were lavishly decorated with peacocks, birds whose flesh was believed in antiquity not to decay, and which therefore became a Christian symbol of immortality.

I pause on what the vellum tells us without words. That pale beige with darkened edges, the little stains, the tiny holes and that gentle wave catching the light at the bottom left speak of aged animal skin, humidity and centuries of use. I notice the stacked fore-edge at the left, irregular and creamy, showing the thickness of the 428-leaf book. The contrast between the brown ink of the dense text and the reddish orange heading helps me tell different hands and moments apart. That blurry band at the top is loss, not decoration.

This page reminds me of a night sky packed with stars. The Greek text fills the upper two-thirds on the right, leaving huge empty margins below and to the left, as if leaving room to breathe, just like the void between constellations. The larger initial at the edge, darkened and with its brown stain, is like a guide star. And above, that larger reddish script works like a title on a sky chart. With no figures, the rhythm of the regular lines creates its own orbit.

It looks like a giant book someone left open to do homework. The page is cookie-cream colored and full of tiny brown letters packed together that I cannot read because they are in Greek. I like that at the bottom and on the left they left a huge blank space, as if they forgot to write. At the top there are bigger orange letters and a blurry little stripe. On the left you can see lots of thin pages stacked up and the page looks a bit wrinkly where the light hits it.
