What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single open page of an old manuscript, photographed straight on against a dark gray background. The right-hand page fills almost the entire frame; only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible at the left, and along the right and bottom edges you can see the thickness of the many stacked leaves. The vellum is creamy, matte, and slightly translucent, with warm brown stains, small dark specks, and soft shadows along the binding. The lower right quadrant is crossed by fine wrinkles and diagonal creases that catch the light. The text, in Greek, is written in reddish-brown ink in tight, slanted lines. Above the main block there is a shorter heading, and down the left side several much larger initials stand out, painted with small gold and colored halos behind them. The handwriting varies in density: some paragraphs are compact and dark, others lighter and more widely spaced. In the upper right corner, the number “171” appears in a later, simpler hand. There are no figures or large illustrations on this page; its visual force comes from the rhythm of the lines, the worn surface, and the contrast between the order of the writing and the irregular aging of the skin.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the overall block of writing and notice how regular it remains despite being done entirely by hand. Then look for the enlarged initials on the left: they mark pauses and new sections. Finally, move closer to the stains and creases at the lower right; that wear changes the page from an abstract text into a physical object that has survived for centuries.
ContextContexto
This is folio 171, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000–1100 in Byzantium, likely in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its author is unknown. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks —symbols of the immortality of the soul— and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page, however, is a dense page of text, not one of those decorated openings.

Curious detailDato curioso
The complete volume has 428 leaves; since each leaf has a front and a back, that amounts to more than 850 pages of vellum copied and organized by hand.

I pause to look at what time has done to this skin. I see the creamy, matte vellum with warm brown stains and tiny dark specks, and those fine wrinkles in the lower right quadrant that catch the light. The reddish-brown ink still holds firm in tight lines, but the surface is now uneven and slightly translucent. I am struck by the contrast between the order of the Greek calligraphy and the wear. The large initials with a golden halo speak of care, and the 171 at the top, added later, of another hand trying to bring order.

Seeing this page is like looking at an ancient sky. The lines of text are ordered constellations over a vellum that is like a creamy, spotted firmament. I am fascinated that it is folio 171, a number that orients us like a coordinate. The large initials with golden glow are guide stars on the left. There are no figures here, just rhythm, like blinking data. I think of the monks in Byzantium copying a thousand years ago, preserving light with ink and gold, just as today we record light from distant stars.

This sheet looks like the skin of a very old animal, all wrinkly at the bottom and with little brown spots. I like to count the stripes of letters that look like reddish-brown waves, all slanted and squeezed together. On the left there are giant letters with golden light around them, as if they were queens. At the top it says 171, like my house number but bigger. I imagine someone wrote a lot, a lot, with no little drawings, just letters. If I touched it, I think it would feel like paper with history and smell like a grandpa.
