What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page from a thick, open bound volume is seen from a slightly angled overhead view, filling most of the frame. The leaf is aged parchment in creamy ivory and yellowed beige, with darkened, uneven edges and tide marks in ochre and light brown from moisture and age. Dense lines of text in reddish-brown ink cover most of the surface, written in Byzantine Greek minuscule — small, fluid, continuous script with occasional slightly enlarged initials. At the top, a heading is blurred and stained with a brownish halo. In the upper left corner there are speckled purple stains, likely mold or faded ink, and a vertical strip of translucent conservation tape runs from top to bottom. To the left, the fore-edge of the book shows hundreds of tightly stacked leaves with darkened edges. The lighting is even and matte, revealing wrinkles, soft creases, and the fibrous, non-glossy texture of the vellum, conveying great age and frequent handling.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the stained heading at the top, then follow the dense block of script downward to appreciate the scribe’s steady hand. Pause on the conservation tape and the purple speckles in the corner — traces of time that contrast with the manuscript’s original purpose of endurance.

ContextContexto

This is folio 174 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated c. 1000–1100, attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, according to Cleveland Museum of Art data. The complete volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. The source notes that each of the four gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing the evangelist, birds — chiefly peacocks as symbols of immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The folio shown is a text page with commentary, consistent with such manuscripts, not one of the illuminated openings. The scribe remains unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

While this folio is plain text, the same book contains opening pages lavishly illuminated with gold and tempera, featuring peacocks and fountains as symbols of eternal life.

Look closely at this folio 174 verso, you can tell it has lived for a thousand years. The vellum is no longer white but a yellowish cream and aged ivory, with irregular edges darkened by time. I see ochre and brown humidity stains and those purplish little speckles in the corner that look like mold. The reddish brown ink in Greek is still very even, but at the top there is a blurred dark halo. And that vertical translucent strip is not part of the original, we added it so this wrinkled and fibrous parchment does not keep splitting.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this folio is like looking at a galaxy made of text. There are hundreds of lines of Byzantine Greek minuscule covering almost the whole cream-colored parchment, uniform like stars in order. This complete book has 428 folios and comes from Constantinople, from around the year 1000. Imagine a monk copying without a telescope or electric light. The page we see does not have the peacocks or the gold that open each gospel, it is just the commentary, the study section. Even so, seeing it so dense makes me think about how much human time is stored here.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a page from a huge really old book. It is cookie-colored with dirty edges and brown stains as if it got wet. It has lots of tiny brown letters all bunched together that I do not understand because they are in Greek. At the top there is a big dark stain and in one corner there are little purple dots. On the left you can see many many pages stacked up, like a paper sandwich. And there is a tape going all the way from top to bottom so it does not tear more.

  1. #1

If you count with your eyes, how many little purple speckles can you spot at least in the upper left corner of the folio?

    HintPista

Look at the upper left corner, on the light parchment, you will see tiny speckles in a violet tone.

  2. #2

What color is the ink used for the dense Greek minuscule that covers the page?

    HintPista

It is not black, notice the warm tone of the letters contrasting with the cream parchment.

  3. #3

What modern translucent element crosses the page vertically to protect it?

    HintPista

Look for a shiny line going from top to bottom, it is not part of the original writing.
