What you would seeLo que verías

A thick bound volume is seen from above, slightly angled, against a dark gray, matte background. Only the right-hand page fills most of the frame; on the left, the stacked edges of many earlier leaves show the book's considerable thickness. The vellum is creamy, uneven, and softly wrinkled, with darker, worn edges, small purple and brown spots, faint stains, and three darker smudged patches near the top. A translucent vertical strip, probably a modern repair or support, runs down the left side of the page. The text, in Greek, is written by hand in brown ink in a small, dense, flowing script, arranged in a justified block with narrow margins. Faint ruled lines guide the rows. Near the top is a paler horizontal heading, difficult to read, flanked by small faded marks. About two-thirds down, the writing changes: the letters become larger, bolder, and more widely spaced, beginning with a prominent capital on the left. Small dark circular marks and a tiny rectangular detail appear in the right and left margins. The lighting is even and soft, revealing the parchment's fibrous texture, gentle shadows in the folds, and no human figures or gestures — only the sustained trace of a scribe's hand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dense upper block and notice how regular the handwriting remains line after line. Then drop to the larger script at the bottom: that change in scale marks a shift within the page. Finally, look at the edges and stains, where the object's age becomes visible.

ContextContexto

This is folio 179, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made around 1000-1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The author is unknown, and the exact monastery is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The complete volume has 428 leaves, yet this quiet text page belongs to the same book whose Gospel openings were decorated with peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul.

If you look closely you will see what moves me: this cream-colored vellum is not perfect, it has wrinkles, darkened edges and little purple and brown spots that tell a thousand years of use. That translucent strip on the left is not original, it is the support we added to keep it from tearing. I love how the brown ink settled into the fibers and how lower down the letters get larger and more spaced with an initial capital at the start. It is the scribe's hand and also time itself.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this folio like a night sky. The dense block of Greek writing is like a field of stars ordered along invisible ruled lines, and then, two thirds down the page, a different constellation appears: larger, spaced letters marking another text. The matte gray background makes the light vellum stand out like the moon. Even though there are no figures here, I know from the record that this 428-leaf book holds illuminated borders with peacocks and fountains. An entire universe inside a book.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks super old and thick, like it has a thousand leaf sandwiches stacked on the left. The page is creamy with little spots and is completely filled with tiny brown letters someone wrote by hand a very long time ago, like endless homework. At the top there is a faded heading and further down the letters get bigger, as if the writer wanted to say hey, this is important!. I like to imagine the monk writing without making mistakes and the see-through strip they added to protect it.
