What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open bound volume photographed from above against a dark grey background, with almost all attention on the left-hand page, folio 180 verso; only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible at the right edge. The support is aged vellum, creamy and uneven, with a slightly pitted, fibrous surface most noticeable in the blank lower half. Around twenty-seven lines of Greek minuscule fill the upper two thirds in brown ink, in a small, dense, slanted hand; abbreviations and ligatures crowd together. Below, the script becomes larger and more spacious, opening with a big, faded initial that looks rubbed or partially erased. The margins hold small sewing or pricking marks along the inner edge, dark burn-like stains and purplish spotting at the top, isolated brown blotches, and a vertical translucent repair strip down the left side. The thick stack of leaves at the fore-edge, the worn corners, and the soft shadow beneath the book convey its weight and age. Light is even and diffuse, with no glare, so the contrast remains between the pale parchment, the warm brown writing, and the muted background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the material damage at the top and along the edges, then move into the orderly block of writing. Pause on the large initial near the lower third: it is where the page shifts scale and emphasis. Finally, notice the empty lower half; the manuscript breathes there and makes its own age visible.

ContextContexto

This is folio 180, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium in Constantinople around 1000–1100 by an unknown author. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks—symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a Constantinopolitan monastery, although this is not known for certain. This particular page shows mainly text rather than a major illumination.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this page is almost entirely handwritten text, the same volume opens each Gospel with illuminated borders featuring peacocks, birds used in Byzantine symbolism to evoke the immortality of the soul.

What holds me is the skin of this creamy vellum, porous and alive, with its empty lower half and the translucent repair strip on the left. At the top I see about twenty-seven tight lines of Greek minuscule in brown ink, full of ligatures, and below a large faded initial, as if worn by time. I care about those stains, the purplish mottling, the sewing pricks and the thick edge of the leaves: they are traces of use, of burns and careful mending that tell us how this Byzantine book from Constantinople has survived.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page like a night sky. The twenty-seven lines of brown ink are dense constellations over pale parchment, which feels like a creamy firmament. I imagine the Byzantine scribe a thousand years ago tracing each letter with the patience we use to map stars. The faded initial below is like a faint nebula, almost erased. And the dark gray background around the book reminds me of the void of space: the text floats, lit by soft even light, serene, inviting slow reading, like someone observing the universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and tired little book someone left open. The page is cookie-cream color and full of tiny brown letters very close together, like little ants lining up! At the top there are many, about twenty-seven rows, and below there is more empty space and a big letter that is fading away. It has little spots, a transparent band-aid on the side and worn corners. I like that the lower half is empty, as if waiting for me to draw something. It looks soft but also strong for lasting so many years.
