What you would seeLo que verías
An open thick volume is shown from a slightly elevated angle, with the right-hand page filling most of the frame. The support is vellum in a warm, time-yellowed ivory tone, with uneven, gently cockled edges and a visibly layered fore-edge on the left that reveals hundreds of stacked leaves. A dense block of Greek text covers the center, written in a regular, flowing Byzantine minuscule in reddish-brown ink, arranged in neat horizontal lines with consistent spacing. Near the upper right margin a enlarged initial letter stands out, painted in blue and red with a dark outline and a small halo of discoloration around it; a second, smaller initial appears mid-way down the left margin. The parchment bears age marks: scattered foxing, pale brown tide lines and staining, especially across the top and in a horizontal band near the bottom where a tiny cross is drawn in ink. The lighting is soft and even, without glare, revealing the matte, slightly wrinkled texture of the skin, its faint pores and creases, and the subtle show-through of ink from the other side. There is no illumination on this page, only script and the quiet traces of centuries of handling and storage.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the whole text block as a woven texture, then look for the small colored initials that punctuate the brown script. Notice the stains and the tiny cross at the bottom margin: they turn a scholarly page into a lived, handled object.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is folio 188 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to ca. 1000–1100 and attributed to a monastery workshop in Constantinople, Byzantium. The complete volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The museum notes that each Gospel opens with a brilliantly illuminated border showing its author together with birds — chiefly peacocks as symbols of immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life. The high level of execution points to a sophisticated Constantinopolitan monastic production. The page seen here contains continuous commentary text and is not one of the illuminated openings described.

Curious detailDato curioso
In Byzantine Gospel books like this one, the peacock featured on illuminated openings was linked to immortality because its flesh was believed not to decay, making it a discreet symbol of resurrection and salvation.

I pause on what time has written over the vellum: that warm ivory tone, the ochre humidity stains and that wavy edge that speaks of 428 tightly packed leaves. The reddish brown Greek ink flows even and steady, but what moves me most are the blue and red initials, so delicate, and that tiny cross at the bottom, drawn like an intimate gesture. I see pores, wrinkles and the show-through from the other side. This is not the illuminated page with gold and peacocks, it is the daily, human and devout work that survived a thousand years.

To me this folio is like a mapped night sky. Each line of Greek is a regular orbit, a constellation of meaning repeated with monastic patience in Constantinople around the year 1000. The blue and red initials work like brighter stars that mark the way, and the ochre stains are nebulae of time, humidity and use. It amazes me to think of 428 folios as 428 nights of observation, copied by hand to preserve light, memory and faith long before telescopes or printing presses existed.

This book looks very old and very big, as if it had a thousand pages stacked on top of each other. The page is cream colored with little brown spots like chocolate and it has lots of tiny letters in another language I do not understand. At the top right there is a big letter painted blue with red, like it is the captain of all the other letters. At the bottom there is a tiny little cross. I like to imagine the monk writing very slowly, without making mistakes, being super careful not to smudge.
