What you would seeLo que verías

We see a thick book open, photographed from above against a plain, dark grey background. The page that fills almost the entire image is on the left: a vellum folio in a yellowed ivory tone, its edges slightly darkened and rippled with age. Along the left we can see the fore-edge of the pages already turned — dozens of thin, uneven leaves in cream and ochre shades that convey the scale of a heavy volume made to last. Running vertically near the left margin is a translucent modern strip, probably a conservation aid, catching a faint shine. The page looks almost empty, but on closer inspection the text from the other side shows through: two faded rectangular blocks in the upper half and a broader, paler area below, with barely legible horizontal lines and some reddish lettering reversed, as in a mirror. There are small stains, scattered dark specks — especially on the right — a brown spot near the centre, and marks of damp or dirt in the corners. The light is diffuse, casting a soft, wavy shadow across the sheet and bringing out its fibrous, slightly rough texture. At the right edge, a sliver of the next page peeks in, with a minimal fragment of colour and gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the page as if it were blank, and then let your eyes adjust to the ghostly blocks of text showing through. Next, follow the edge of the stacked leaves on the left to sense the weight of the whole volume. The tiny sliver of colour on the right changes the reading: this quiet page sits between richly decorated ones.

ContextContexto

This is folio 199, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author around 1000-1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, as the Cleveland Museum of Art suggests. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. According to the source, each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the immortality of the soul, and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. In this image, however, the verso is almost blank; the exact reason for that is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the writing that seems to float on this page is not on this side at all — it is showing through in reverse from the other side of the thin vellum.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why preserve and display a nearly blank page with the same care as an illuminated one?¿Por qué conservar y mostrar una página casi en blanco con el mismo cuidado que una iluminada?
  2. What does the text showing through from the other side tell us about vellum as a writing material?¿Qué nos dice el texto que se transparenta sobre la vitela como material de escritura?
  3. How does the experience of a sacred book change when we see its wear, stains, and repairs, and not only its decoration?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de un libro sagrado cuando vemos su desgaste, sus manchas y sus reparaciones, y no solo su decoración?

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look at this almost empty page and tell me it does not move you. This is the verso of folio 199, vellum in yellowish ivory with darkened and wavy edges after a thousand years of history. You see that vertical translucent strip, it is modern, for conservation. What looks empty is actually transparency, the text from the other side shows through in two blocks above and faint lines below, with inverted reddish letters. Each stain, each dark speck, is accumulated time. This book has 428 leaves and was made to last.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this is like looking at the sky on a cloudy night. The page is empty but not really, it reveals ghost text from the other side, like stars behind a veil. Two rectangles on top and a diffuse glow below with horizontal lines. You can even make out reddish letters in reverse. It is vellum, photographed from above on a dark gray background, with its fibrous texture and soft shadow. It reminds me that the invisible also leaves a trace, like the light from Byzantium a thousand years ago that still reaches us.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet looks like it has nothing but if you get really close it does have hidden things. You can see shadows of letters from the other side, backwards and in reddish color. It is a little stained, with brown speckles and crinkly edges like old paper. On the left side you can see the chunky part of the book, with lots and lots of stacked little pages in cream color. And there is a shiny little strip holding it. I like it because it looks like a magic page waiting for someone to write or draw something new.

It is translucent, reflects light and seems to hold or protect the old leaf.

  3. #3

What color are some of the inverted letters that show through from the other side?

    HintPista

They are not black like most of them, they have a warm tone that stands out among the faint lines.
