What you would seeLo que verías
An open volume is seen from above against a smooth, dark gray background. It fills nearly the whole frame, and only the left-hand page is fully visible: the verso of folio 202. A narrow strip of the next page appears at the right. On the left, the thickness of the stacked leaves is visible, with yellowed, uneven, slightly wavy edges. The vellum is aged ivory, matte, with brown stains, small specks, darkening at the corners, and two or three small holes with dark halos, especially near the right margin and mid-left area. More than the lower half of the page, including a wide bottom margin, is left empty. The Greek text occupies the upper half. At the top are about eighteen lines in larger, more spaced lettering, in sepia ink with red touches; an enlarged initial stands out at the beginning. Below, after a transitional line, comes a dense block of about eighteen lines in much smaller, tighter script, also sepia, with abbreviations and fine strokes. The light is soft and even, without strong glare, revealing the fibrous texture, gentle undulations of the parchment, and fragility of its edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the large empty lower margin and then at the contrast between the two blocks of script. Notice the larger, redder lettering above and the dense commentary below: that change in scale changes how the page is read. Finally, look for the stains and small holes, which reveal the material life of the vellum.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 202 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000–1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, although the author and exact workshop are unknown. It is written in Greek with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, and bound in leather. The volume has 428 leaves. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the soul's immortality, and fountains evoking the fountain of life. This page, by contrast, is a working text page.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this folio looks almost plain, the same volume's Gospel openings were lavishly illuminated with gold, peacocks, and fountains.

I focus on what the parchment tells without words: the ivory-toned vellum is wavy, with yellowish irregular edges, brown stains and two or three holes with dark halos. I see the fragility of a working page, photographed on a gray background, where the lower half is left empty. Sepia ink and red touches sit on a fibrous surface marked by time, humidity and handling. This is not a brilliant illumination, it is the trace of everyday use in a monastery.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to the order of this page: on top about eighteen lines of large spaced letters, like bright constellations, and below a dense block of another eighteen lines of tiny crowded script, like a star-filled sky. The larger initial marks the beginning like a guide star, and the red touches act as signals. I picture a monk copyist around the year 1000 in Constantinople, aligning Greek text on vellum with the same patience used to chart a sky map.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a very old and tired book, open on a gray table. The page is cookie-colored with little brown spots and tiny holes, and the edges look crinkly as if it got wet. On top there are big spaced letters and below many tiny letters all together, all in brown with a little red. The funny thing is the bottom part is empty, with nothing written. I wonder if the writer got tired and left the page half empty to continue later.
