What you would seeLo que verías

An open vellum folio is seen from a slightly angled top view, with the book’s spine on the left. The page fills almost the entire frame against a neutral gray background. The parchment is a creamy ivory turning to warm beige and light ochre, crossed by soft horizontal cockling and wrinkles in the lower half and a few small dark stains near the right edge. Writing covers most of the surface in two inks: a deep black-brown for the main text in larger lines and a reddish sepia for the commentary in smaller, tighter script packed between lines and along the upper and lower margins. Enlarged initials with touches of red and ornamental flourishes mark paragraph openings. The script is a regular, dense Byzantine Greek minuscule with abbreviations and diacritics. Even, diffuse light reveals the fibrous, velvety texture of the skin, the yellowed and worn edges of the bound volume, and a small round hole in the right margin. There is no figurative illumination on this page; the focus is graphic and material, conveying a sense of fragile, venerable antiquity and quiet scholarly labor.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the page as a surface, noting the contrast between the darker main text and the lighter reddish commentary that frames it. Then look closely at material traces — the cockling of the vellum, age spots, and the enlarged initial — which reveal how the page was made, used, and preserved over centuries.

ContextContexto

This is folio 211 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated c. 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. The full volume comprises 428 leaves with Greek texts, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. While each Gospel opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing the Evangelist, peacocks symbolizing immortality and fountains as the fountain of life, this folio presents only text and commentary without figurative decoration. Its high level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The maker is unknown and no specific patron or later provenance details are recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

The manuscript presents a double textual layer on one page — scriptural text and exegetical commentary — a scholarly layout characteristic of Byzantine Gospel books that allowed readers to study scripture and interpretation together.

I focus on the material, on what time has written without ink. This creamy ivory parchment breathes, with its horizontal wrinkles, its dark spots near the right edge and that small round hole that is part of its history. I see two inks coexisting: the deep black of the main text and the reddish sepia of the tight comments in the margins. The initials with touches of red tell me where each idea begins. It feels fragile, velvety and venerable.

As when I observe the sky, here there is also main text and notes in the margin, like stars and satellites. This folio 211 verso has no peacocks or fountains of life like other illuminated folios in the book, only dense Byzantine Greek minuscule, with abbreviations and diacritics. I imagine a scriptorium in Constantinople between 1000 and 1100, copying under diffuse light on vellum. The spine on the left reminds me this is part of a larger universe of 428 leaves.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very very old letter that someone wrote by hand with great care. The paper is not paper, it is skin and it looks wrinkly and with little spots like freckles on the right edge and even a tiny hole. There are big black letters and between them tiny crowded reddish letters, as if they were secret whispers. At the beginning there are larger letters with red. I like to think that a thousand years ago a monk made it without erasing anything.

It is not an ink stain, it is a little hole in the parchment skin.

On this page two ink colors coexist, what color is the smaller crowded script of the comments?

It is not the deep black of the main text, look for the warm tone in the margins.
