What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows an open book photographed from above against a dark gray background. The right-hand page fills almost the entire frame, while only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible at the left, beside the central fold. On the right edge, the thickness of the bound volume can be seen in a stack of slightly uneven, cream-colored leaves. The page is made of vellum in warm ivory and beige tones, with soft undulations, faint stains, darker edges, and small irregularities that reveal its age. In the upper right corner, the number “218” is written in a lighter hand. Most of the surface is covered with handwritten Greek text in brown ink. The upper portion uses small, tight, slanted lettering arranged in long lines. Around the middle, the writing changes abruptly: the letters become larger, rounder, darker, and more widely spaced, forming a distinct block. Below it, the small script returns for a few lines. Two enlarged initials project slightly into the left margin of the larger passages. The lighting is even but soft, creating gentle shadows along the gutter, the lower edge, and the page ends, emphasizing the matte, fibrous texture of the vellum and the fragility of the volume.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the number 218 in the upper corner and then move down the page. Notice how the lettering changes size midway, transforming the page from a dense block into a more open, emphatic passage. Finally, look at the initials projecting into the left margin: they help a reader navigate the text.

ContextContexto

This is folio 218 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium around 1000–1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The author is unknown. The volume contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source states that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular folio, by contrast, is devoted almost entirely to writing. The exact scribe and place of production are not known with certainty.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual detail is the contrast between the scripts: the smaller, compressed writing in the upper half gives way to noticeably larger, darker letters, so even without reading Greek one can see that the page is divided into different levels of text.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

I focus on the vellum in warm ivory and beige, with soft ripples, faint stains and darkened edges that speak of a thousand years of life. I see the open volume, its thickness of cream pages and the fragility of the central fold with delicate shadows. I notice two scripts: on top a small, slanted and dense hand, and in the middle a block of large, round and dark characters. The enlarged initials elegantly mark the beginning of each passage with sober grace.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As if looking at an ancient sky, I see constellations of brown ink on a vellum firmament. At the top, a tight swarm of small letters looks like a dense Milky Way; in the center, larger and spaced characters form a bright block that guides the reading. The number «218» in the corner works like a coordinate on a star chart. It is a Byzantine gospel book from Constantinople, made to orient as much as to be read.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and wrinkly, like a turtle's skin. It is open and you can see a light page with lots of little brown letters I do not understand because they are in Greek. At the top the letters are tiny and crowded, and in the middle they become big and chubby, as if someone wanted to shout something important. In the little corner it says «218». I imagine the monk writing very carefully without any smudges.
