What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume rests on a flat, dark gray surface, seen straight from above. The left page almost fills the frame, slightly curved up at the gutter on the right and over the stacked leaves visible along the left edge; a sliver of the facing page appears on the right. The vellum is creamy, uneven, and aged, with browned edges, soft stains, faint reddish traces near the top and bottom, and a fibrous, matte texture. The Greek text occupies only the central and upper area, leaving unusually wide, mostly empty margins. It is handwritten in brown and reddish-brown ink in several registers: larger lines at the top, a block of much smaller, denser script in the middle, and larger lines again below. Two drop-shaped initials open new sections, one mid-page on the left and a larger, bold K below. Two small, dark holes surrounded by scorched-looking halos pierce the page, one low on the left, another at mid-height on the right, with a tiny mark near the lower right. The handwriting is fluid, slanted, and crowded with ligatures and abbreviations. The light is even, emphasizing the relief of the leaves, the worn binding at top right, and every crease in the support.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the large, widely spaced script in the center and the smaller, tighter writing that wraps around it. Then look at the initials and the faded traces of color at the edges, which guide the eye without overwhelming the text. Finally, notice the holes and stains: they turn an orderly page into an object marked by a long material life.

ContextContexto

This is folio 220 (verso) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000–1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, Byzantium, according to the source. It is written in Greek in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, and forms part of a bound volume of 428 leaves. In books of this kind, the Gospel text was accompanied by commentary to aid reading and interpretation. The source notes that each Gospel in the volume opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The specific passage on this page is not identified in the source.

  1. How does the coexistence of a main text and a smaller commentary change the act of reading on a single page?¿Cómo cambia el acto de leer el que convivan en una misma página un texto principal y un comentario en letra menor?
  2. What might the holes, stains, and wear tell us about the use and preservation of this book over a thousand years?¿Qué pueden contarnos los agujeros, las manchas y el desgaste sobre el uso y la conservación de este libro durante mil años?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on this creamy, aged vellum with darkened edges and soft reddish stains. I notice the fibrous matte texture, the gentle curve by the spine and the stacked fore-edge on the left. I am drawn to the two small holes with a burnt halo and the little mark near the corner. The brown and reddish-brown ink shows different registers of script, with fluid ligatures and drop-shaped initials that set the pace for reading.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I think of the monastic patience behind every line. Around 1000–1100, in a monastery in Constantinople, copying this Gospel Book of 428 leaves was a way of measuring time as we measure the sky. The Greek text fills only the center, leaving wide empty margins like a blank universe around it. Those drop-shaped initials are like stars guiding the reading through a cosmos of ink and vellum.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks super old and like it is yawning open on the gray table! Its page is creamy with little spots and two burnt tiny holes, one at the bottom left and one halfway up on the right. At the top the letters are big, in the middle they get tiny and crowded, and at the bottom they are big again. There are two little drop letters starting new parts, and I imagine the person who wrote it got really tired hands.
