What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume is seen from above against a dark gray background, slightly angled. The page on the right fills almost the entire frame; only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible on the left, along with the central fold and small binding stitches. The vellum is a warm, aged cream, darker and worn at the edges, with soft undulations, faint stains, and a few small brown spots that look like tiny burns or losses, especially near the ornaments. At the upper right, handwritten in gray, is the number "223." Two blocks of Greek handwriting cover the upper two thirds of the page. The first block uses small, dense, dark brown letters; the second, beginning midway down, uses larger script in reddish brown, as if separating two levels of text. At the start of that second block stands an enlarged initial, and near the top a faded decorative heading with small flourishes at both ends is barely visible. The lower third is blank. On the right, the stacked edges of many leaves reveal the book's considerable thickness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the contrast between the two blocks of writing: the tighter upper lines and the larger lower ones. Then look for the oversized initial and the number 223, small landmarks that helped a medieval reader navigate. Finally, notice the stains and holes; they turn an abstract text into a physical object that has survived for centuries.

ContextContexto

This is folio 223, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the soul's immortality, and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, although this is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

This is a mostly plain text page, but the same volume opens each of its four Gospels with brilliantly illuminated borders featuring peacocks and fountains, both linked to the salvation and immortality of the soul.

This folio makes me think about hands and materials. The warm cream vellum is rippled and darkened at the edges, with faint stains and small brown dots that show its age and use. I focus on the stitching visible by the central fold and the thick edge of leaves on the right, revealing a volume of 428 folios. I distinguish two levels of script in dark brown and reddish brown inks, with an enlarged initial marking the start of the second block and a faded header with flourishes above.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this folio 223 as an ordered sky. At the top, the number 223 handwritten in gray works like a coordinate. Two blocks of Greek writing fill the upper two thirds, like dense constellations in dark brown and reddish brown. The enlarged initial is like a guide star marking where a new passage begins. The blank lower third is a luminous void, while the worn edges and dark gray background recall how time weathers any ancient map.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like that the book is open as if someone just left it there. The right page is huge and the left one just peeks in, and you can see the little stitches in the middle. At the top right it says 223 in small gray numbers. There are two kinds of letters, tiny crowded ones in dark brown and bigger ones in reddish brown with a giant starting letter. At the bottom there is nothing written, just a big blank space. The edges look very old, with little waves and spots.
