The image shows, from directly above, the verso of a folio in a thick bound book resting on a smooth, dark gray background. On the left are the inner spine area and the edges of many stacked leaves, irregular, yellowed, and slightly wavy; a translucent vertical strip crosses near the fold and seems to hold or protect the open volume. The main page fills almost the entire frame: it is vellum in a cream tone, with brownish stains, soft creases, and worn corners that reveal its age. On it, Greek text is handwritten in several hierarchies. At the top and in the final two lines, larger, darker, more widely spaced letters predominate; between them, a dense central block gathers small, tightly packed lines. Some words and initials stand out in reddish ink, and to the left of the central block an enlarged, darker, more elaborate initial projects into the margin. The ink varies among brown, black, and muted red. There are no figurative illustrations on this side: the ornament is calligraphic. Even, diffuse light reveals the fibrous texture of the parchment, small wrinkles, and a faint shadow along the lower edge.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the contrast between the large lines at the top and bottom and the dense block in the middle: that difference in scale organizes the page. Then move to the left margin and find the enlarged initial and the reddish touches, small signals that guide reading. Finally, notice the edges of the gathered leaves, which remind you that this sheet belongs to a large, much-handled volume.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 234 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably Constantinople, around 1000-1100, by an unknown maker. The volume has 428 leaves with Greek text, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the soul's immortality — and fountains of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a Constantinopolitan monastery, although this is not known for certain. This particular page is mainly textual, without figurative illumination.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: although the book is described as illuminated with gold and color, this page achieves its richness almost entirely through calligraphy, with changes in letter size, spacing, and touches of red ink.

If you look closely, you will see this cream-colored vellum is not smooth: it shows brownish stains, soft wrinkles and yellowed, wavy edges that speak of a thousand years of history. I focus on the two inks: dark brown for the main text and muted red to highlight words and initials, like that more elaborate initial to the left of the central block. I also notice the calligraphic hierarchy, with large letters at the top and bottom and a dense, small block in the middle. That translucent strip crossing the gutter helps us keep the volume open without stressing the spine.

To me this page feels like an organized sky. At the top and bottom, the large, spaced letters are like guiding constellations marking the way, while the tight central block is a dense milky way of Greek writing. There are no figures here, just rhythm and hierarchy, but I know from the record that the complete book does have bright illuminations with peacocks and fountains of life at the start of each Gospel. It is fascinating to think that this folio 234 verso, made in Byzantium around 1000-1100, was copied by hand on vellum under a very different light than ours.

This leaf looks super old and wrinkly! It is cream-colored like a cookie and has little brown spots. What I like most is that the letters are not all the same: at the top there are big spaced letters, in the middle there are lots of tiny packed lines, and some words are painted red. On the left there is a special fancier little letter. On the side you can see many little pages stacked from the thick book. I imagine the monk writing with lots of patience and without making mistakes, because he could not erase.
