What you would seeLo que verías
A single open page fills almost the whole image, seen from slightly above against a dark gray, nearly flat background. On the left, only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible; on the right, the stacked edges of many leaves and part of the binding suggest a thick, heavy volume. The main leaf is an off-white, creamy vellum, uneven and visibly aged. Fine wrinkles and soft folds run diagonally across the sheet, especially in the lower half and near the center, catching a diffuse, even light that reveals its slightly rough, skin-like texture. The edges are irregular and lightly darkened, with small brown spots, punctures along the right margin, and a few darker marks where the surface seems worn or stained. Handwritten Greek text occupies most of the page in many close lines of brown ink. The script varies: the upper and middle sections are smaller and denser, while certain passages stand out in larger, bolder lettering. At the beginning of several blocks, enlarged initials and words in reddish ink break the uniformity. At the top is another line in red, partly faded, and in the upper right corner the number '263' is written in dark ink. No figures or scenes appear on this page; its visual force comes from the rhythm of the handwriting, the blank margins, and the traces of time on the vellum.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the texture of the page, before trying to read it. Then follow the shifts between the smaller, denser script and the larger, darker passages, and notice how the red initials guide your eye. The creases and small holes change the reading: this is not an abstract text, but an object handled for centuries.
ContextContexto
This is folio 263, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries produced in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000-1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source explains that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds - principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul - and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The author is unknown, and the exact monastery is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this folio is mostly handwriting, the opening pages of the Gospels in the same volume were richly illuminated: in Byzantine symbolism, the peacocks shown there represented the immortality of the soul.

I look at the dull cream vellum and touch it with my eyes. It shows diagonal wrinkles, brownish spots and darkened edges that tell a thousand years of life. Brown ink forms tight lines and then larger letters mark a shift in the voice of the text. The reddish touches, now faded at the top, organize the reading. The perforations along the right margin and the number 263 in the corner speak of a 428-leaf book that still breathes under its leather binding.

To me this page is a sky without stars. The lines of Greek are ordered constellations, with dense zones and empty spaces that let the margins breathe. The red initials are like markers pointing to a new system. Even the wrinkles in the vellum look like orbits drawn by time. It is a handmade universe from Constantinople a thousand years ago, where even light reveals soft craters on the skin of the book and the weight of the stacked leaves on the right.

It looks like the longest homework in the world written on wrinkly cookie-colored paper. There are tiny letters packed close together and then suddenly big letters that shout look here. At the top there is a red line that is almost erased and in the corner it says 263 like the page of a giant book. On the right you can see many leaves stacked like a huge sandwich. There are no little drawings here but it looks very old and it makes me want to touch it gently.
