What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open bound volume photographed from above against a dark gray background, with almost the entire frame occupied by the right-hand page, numbered “264” in pencil at the upper right. The vellum is cream, aged, and uneven, with brown stains, darker edges, translucent spots, small losses, and a slightly wavy surface. On the left, part of the preceding leaf and the gutter of the binding are visible; on the right and below, the stacked thickness of many leaves can be seen. The text, handwritten in Greek in brown ink, is arranged in two distinct blocks. The upper block has about fifteen lines in larger, more spacious script, with some words or strokes in a reddish tone and a line that extends slightly into the margin. Below it, a second block fills much of the page with smaller, denser handwriting and narrower line spacing. A large initial letter projects into the left margin at the start of this section. There are no figures or large illustrations on this folio. Along the right margin runs a vertical row of tiny holes, probably prickings used to rule the page. Light is soft and even, revealing the matte, fibrous texture of the vellum and the irregular flow of ink over a thousand-year-old surface.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the contrast between the two blocks of writing, then move to the margins. Notice the large initial projecting on the left and the small holes along the right edge: these details show how the page was made, organized, and read. Although the source describes illuminated openings, this plain folio reveals the book's everyday labor.
ContextContexto
This is folio 264, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author around 1000–1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it comes from Byzantium and was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, although that origin is not certain. The bound volume has 428 leaves with Greek text and was made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks, and fountains; this particular page, however, is devoted almost entirely to writing.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: despite the gold and tempera mentioned in the technique, this folio shows almost no color or ornament. The richness of the book described by the source is concentrated at the openings of the Gospels, while pages like this one prioritize continuous reading.

I pause on this aged cream vellum with brownish stains, darkened edges and a slightly wavy surface. I see folio 264 photographed from above, with its pencil number in the corner and the vertical pricking holes for ruling along the right margin. I focus on the two blocks of Greek writing in brown ink, one more open at the top with about fifteen lines and another dense one below with a large initial in the margin. I also notice the inner spine and the thickness of the 428 leaves of this Byzantine book made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding.

For me this page is like a ruled sky. The dark gray background makes the cream vellum stand out like an old moon full of spots and craters left by time. At the top I see about fifteen more spaced lines, like bright stars, and below a dense compact block like a milky way of Greek letters. I love the vertical row of holes in the right margin, like a guiding constellation so the scribe would not get lost. This folio 264 from a Book of Gospels with commentaries from around 1000 to 1100, with 428 leaves, reminds me of patient work in a monastery, perhaps in Constantinople.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a very very old book someone opened carefully. The leaf is cream colored with little brown spots and looks a bit wrinkly as if it had lived for a thousand years. At the top there are a few big lines and at the bottom lots of tiny lines all huddled together in Greek, and a big letter sticking out into the margin as if it wanted to say hi. In the corner it says 264 in pencil and beside it there is a row of tiny holes to make straight lines. I like to imagine the monk writing with no pictures on this page, even though other parts of the 428-leaf book do have peacocks and golden things.
