The image shows a thick bound volume seen from above and slightly from the side, resting on a dark gray, nearly flat surface. On the left, dozens of stacked vellum leaves are visible, with uneven, slightly wavy and browned edges that convey the book's weight and age. The open page occupies most of the frame: a sheet of cream-colored, matte vellum with darker edges, small stains, a vertical crease near the top center, and a long horizontal fold across the middle. The text, handwritten in Greek in brown ink, fills the right two-thirds of the page in two distinct blocks. The upper block is written in smaller, denser, more slanted script, with some words or letters highlighted in a reddish tone. Below it, after a brief gap, the second block uses larger, rounder, more widely spaced letters, opening with a decorated initial touched with red. Margins are wide and mostly empty, except for small isolated marks and signs in brown and red ink at the sides. The handwriting varies in intensity, as if the pen had been re-inked several times. No figures or illustrations appear on this page: only script, vellum, and the traces of handling.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the thickness of the stacked leaves at the left and the roughness of the edges; then move to the individual hand that wrote the page a thousand years ago. Compare the two blocks of text: the difference in ink, letter size, and spacing is what reveals that this is more than one layer of writing. Finally, look for stains, folds, and small marks in the margins, where the passage of centuries becomes visible.
ContextContexto
This is folio 286 (verso) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author around 1000–1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the source. It is written with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, and contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — chiefly peacocks, symbols of the soul's immortality — and fountains, representing the fountain of life. This particular page, however, shows only text, without illumination. It is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this folio is plain text, the same volume opens each Gospel with peacocks: in Byzantine symbolism they represented the immortality of the soul, and their feathers were believed not to decay.

Look at the weight of the book and the cream-colored vellum with darker, stained and browned edges. I focus on the long horizontal crease across the page and the small vertical crack near the top, traces of a thousand years of use. I see two blocks of Greek text in brown ink: on top small, tight and slanted script with reddish highlights, below larger, rounded and airy letters opening with a red initial. The wide, nearly empty margins and small side marks tell me of careful reading inside a monastery, unhurried.

To me this page is like a sky with two constellations. On top, a dense block of tiny, tight script looks like a distant cluster; below, the larger, spaced writing shines like nearer stars. The brown ink shifts in strength as if light were flickering and the reddish touches act as markers. With no drawings or figures, just text on cream vellum, it is a map for finding direction. The empty margins are the dark silence between constellations that lets the words breathe.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This book looks very old and heavy, with lots of brownish little pages stacked on one side. The page is cookie-cream colored and has a little fold line across the middle and a tiny crack on top. I see two groups of funny letters in Greek with brown ink: tiny and crowded on top, bigger below with a red letter at the start. There are no little drawings, just words and tiny stains. I like to imagine someone long ago writing very carefully and turning the page super slowly.
