What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single open leaf of an ancient codex, photographed at a slight angle against a dark gray background. The support is vellum, warm creamy beige turning to light tan at the worn, uneven edges, with visible cockling, horizontal undulations, and a pronounced crease near the lower right corner. The parchment surface looks soft and fibrous, stained with age spots and faint brown discolorations, especially along the lower margin and fore-edge. Dense Greek minuscule script in reddish-brown ink fills the page in tight, continuous lines. The main text occupies the upper two thirds, about eighteen lines, starting with a slightly enlarged initial letter. Below, a second block of much smaller, densely packed commentary script appears, about eleven lines, separated by a thin horizontal stroke and beginning with another enlarged initial. On the right margin there are tiny dark ink blots and annotations. In the upper right corner, modern pencil foliation reads 288 and 208. Lighting is even, revealing the texture of the skin, the fading and pooling of ink, and the delicate, handmade irregularity of every line. This is a scholarly reading page, unadorned yet rich in material presence.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the contrast between the warm vellum and the dark script, then compare the two scales of writing — the larger Gospel text above and the tiny commentary below. Notice the creases, stains and pencil numbers in the corner: traces of centuries of handling, study and curation that give the leaf its lived history.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is folio 288 from a bound volume of 428 leaves containing the four Gospels with commentaries in Greek, made of ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding, dated ca. 1000–1100. Its high quality suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. While this leaf shows only text, other pages in the same manuscript open each Gospel with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting the Evangelist, peacocks as symbols of immortality, and fountains as symbols of the fountain of life. The work belongs to the Medieval Art department and was purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund. The scribe and illuminator remain unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Though this page is plain, the complete manuscript is renowned for its opening pages for each Gospel, richly decorated with peacocks and fountains, long-standing Byzantine emblems of eternal life and salvation.

If you look closely you will see this is not paper but vellum, prepared skin that now looks creamy yellow with brown age spots. Notice the irregular, darkened edges, the horizontal creases and that strong wrinkle on the lower right corner. The ink is reddish brown, sometimes dense, sometimes faded. On top there is the main text with about eighteen lines and below, separated by a line, the smaller commentary block. I am drawn to those enlarged initials and the pencil numbering 288.

To me this folio is like an ancient sky. The creamy vellum is the vault and the reddish brown ink forms constellations of tiny Byzantine script. Count about eighteen lines on top and eleven even tighter lines below in the commentary. It is folio 288 from a 428 folio codex holding the four Gospels, made around 1000-1100 in Constantinople. This side is sober, with no figures, just for reading. Imagine the portraits, peacocks and fountains that appear on other pages like brighter stars in the same universe.

It looks like a very old and wrinkly sheet, as if it had traveled for a thousand years. It is creamy with little brown spots and it is all creased, with a big wrinkle at the bottom right. It has lots of little Greek letters in reddish brown, some big ones at the start and then many tiny ones packed together. At the top it says 288 in pencil. There are no little pictures here, just lots of letters to read. I wonder who wrote it so carefully in Constantinople without making a mistake.
