What you would seeLo que verías

A single open page of a manuscript on vellum is shown, viewed slightly from above with the binding gutter on the left. The parchment is warm cream to pale ochre, mottled with age, foxing spots, cockling and soft wrinkles, and its outer edge is darkened and uneven. A dense block of Greek minuscule in reddish-brown ink fills most of the surface, written in tight, regular lines from top to bottom, with small red initials and marginal marks at the upper and left margins. Two small dark brown circular stains appear on the right margin, likely from age or handling, and the upper right corner bears faint penciled foliation numbers, 249 and 300. The lighting is even and matte, emphasizing the fibrous texture of the skin and the delicate, rhythmic pen strokes rather than gloss or gilding, which is not visible on this text page. Behind the leaf, a flat slate-gray support provides neutral contrast. No figural illumination is present here, only script and its subtle material traces.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall texture of the script block, then look closely at ink color, line spacing and the small red marginal signs. Follow the surface of the parchment to notice cockling, stains and tiny holes that record centuries of handling. Consider how this plain text leaf relates to the book’s described illuminated openings with peacocks and fountains.

ContextContexto

This leaf is folio 300 recto from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated about 1000–1100 and localized to Byzantium, Constantinople, in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The complete bound volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts, made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. According to museum information, each Gospel opens with a brilliantly illuminated border showing the Evangelist, birds —chiefly peacocks as symbols of immortality— and fountains as the fountain of life. Its high level of craft suggests it was probably produced in a Constantinopolitan monastery. This particular folio displays the commentary text without illumination.

Curious detailDato curioso

While this folio shows only brown ink text, the parent volume is known for its opening pages where Evangelist portraits are framed by gold, peacocks and fountains, motifs that signal paradise and eternal life in Byzantine art.

What moves me most about this folio 300 is its honest materiality. I see a yellowish cream vellum with wrinkles, dark circular stains on the right margin and edges darkened by time. The reddish brown ink of the Byzantine Greek is very stable, with tightly packed lines covering the whole page and small red touches at the top and on the left. There is no gold or miniature here, just commentary text, which lets you appreciate the matte parchment, its ripples and even tiny moth perforations.

I always look for light and here the light is very different from other pages in the same codex. This sheet does not shine, it has no gold or illuminated birds, only a soft even light that reveals the matte texture of the parchment. It makes me think about how we observe: sometimes the sky is full of figures and sometimes there is only background, continuous and dense, like this column of reddish brown Greek writing. That contrast between pages with peacock borders and this text only page reminds me that knowledge also needs sober pages to hold itself up.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and very used, as if many people had read it. The paper is not paper, it is skin called vellum and it is cream colored with little brown spots and wrinkly edges. Everything is full of tiny reddish brown Greek letters, packed tightly from top to bottom, and at the top there are small red marks. On the right there are two dark round spots that look like beauty marks on the book. I like that there are no little drawings here, just letters, and you can see the open book with its spine on the left.

Look closely: how many dark circular stains can you clearly see on the right margin of this page?

    HintPista

Look at the right edge of the cream colored parchment, near the tiny perforations.

  2. #2

The background of the text is a warm parchment. Which of these tones best describes its base color: yellowish cream, intense blue or olive green?

    HintPista

It is the lightest and warmest color in the palette, like old vellum.

  3. #3

On this specific sheet you will not see figurative illumination. What covers almost the whole surface of the folio: a miniature with peacocks, a dense column of Greek writing or a map?

    HintPista

Look for tightly packed lines of reddish brown ink going from top to bottom with no bird drawings.
