What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from above against a smooth, dark gray background. The right-hand page fills almost the entire frame; only a narrow strip of the left-hand page is visible, its writing cut off at the edge. The vellum is cream-colored, with uneven margins, faint stains, small spots of wear, and slightly darkened corners from handling. At the top right, “326” is written in pencil beside another crossed-out note. The Greek writing is arranged in blocks of different sizes. In the upper section, six widely spaced lines appear in reddish ink with thick strokes. Below them is a dense block of small, closely packed lettering in dark brown ink, with large initials projecting into the left margin and occasional signs and words in red. A similar block occupies the center, and four large red lines close the text near the bottom, leaving a broad blank space beneath. There are no figurative drawings on this folio: calligraphy takes center stage, through the rhythms and contrasts between the large and the minute, the dark and the reddish. Even lighting reveals the soft, almost papery texture of the support and the thickness of the volume along the right edge, where many leaves are stacked.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, look for the contrast between the large red lines at the top and bottom and the dense small writing between them. Then move to the left margin and follow the enlarged initials that punctuate the commentary. The wide blank space at the foot of the page makes the weight of centuries of reading easier to feel.

ContextContexto

This is folio 326 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, likely in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The author, scribe, and illustrators are unknown. The complete volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum with a leather binding, although no gold or figurative images are visible on this particular page. The source explains that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — chiefly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its level of sophistication suggests it was probably produced in a monastery in Constantinople; the specific monastery is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The complete book has 428 leaves; the discreet pencil number “326” at the upper right is a modern trace laid over a manuscript written around a thousand years ago.

If you get close you will see this cream parchment is not perfect: its edges are irregular, it has faint stains and the corners are slightly darkened by so many hands that have opened it. I am moved by the contrast between the six large lines at the top and the four at the bottom in reddish ink, and the compact block in dark brown at the center. The initials that stick out into the left margin and the touches of red are not decoration, they are guides to help you breathe and not get lost. A lot of white space remains below, as if the page needed rest. You can feel the thickness of the book on the right, so many sheets piled up.

This reminds me of looking at an old sky mapped with care. The six wide lines at the top in red are like bright, spaced stars, and the tiny text in dark brown is like a dense, packed Milky Way in the center. Even the large initials in the left margin look like constellations marking the way. At the top right the number 326 written in pencil and the crossed-out note are like coordinates added centuries later by another observer. There are no drawings here, just rhythm, but I picture the scribe copying in Byzantium, around the year one thousand, under light that also came from the stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book is open as if someone left it in the middle of homework. The page is cream colored and looks soft even though it has little stains. At the top there are six big lines in red and then a bunch of tiny little letters in brown that look like ants lined up. On the left side some large letters stick out from the group as if they want to peek out. At the bottom there are four more large lines in red and then a lot of blank space, as if for drawing. On the right you can see many pages together, it is a very chubby and very old book.
