What you would seeLo que verías

An early bound manuscript is shown open to a single page, photographed in three-quarter view against a neutral gray background. The thick volume dominates the frame, with its spine on the left revealing hundreds of stacked leaves whose fore-edge is yellowed, uneven and slightly warped. The visible leaf is vellum, a pale, creamy ivory with mottling, faint foxing spots and darkened edges from age and handling. Two blocks of handwritten Greek text in reddish-brown ink cover the page, rendered in dense, regular Byzantine minuscule script aligned to faint ruling lines. The upper block is shorter and serves as a heading or title, written with slightly larger and darker strokes, and a small decorated initial marks its left edge. The main body occupies the center, with tightly spaced lines running margin to margin. In the upper right corner a faded ornamental trace in red and blue hints at former illumination. Even, diffused lighting reveals the fibrous texture, soft creases, tiny wrinkles and translucence of the parchment, as well as a clear conservation strip along the left margin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the book as a physical object, its bulk and the aged tone of the parchment. Then move to the script, noting the even rhythm of the Greek minuscule and the two distinct text blocks. Finally look for signs of age —stains, darkened edges and the faint ornament above— that reveal a thousand years of material history.

ContextContexto

This is folio 331 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries by an unknown maker, dated c. 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The work is executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding and comprises 428 leaves with Greek texts. While this folio shows only text, each of the four gospels in the volume opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting the Evangelist portrait, birds —chiefly peacocks as symbols of immortality— and fountains representing the fountain of life. Its high level of craftsmanship suggests it was probably produced and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople.

Curious detailDato curioso

Though this folio looks plain, the same manuscript holds lavishly illuminated openings with gold, peacocks and fountains, classic Byzantine symbols of eternal life.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Come closer and you will see what moves me, the skin of this folio 331 verso. It is pale ivory vellum, stained and rippled after a thousand years of use, with darkened edges and that yellowish fore-edge of hundreds of stacked leaves. I notice the reddish brown ink of the tiny Byzantine minuscule, so regular over almost invisible ruling lines, and the transparent conservation tape protecting the left margin. This page shows only text, but its fragility and endurance tell the story of its preservation.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this Book of Gospels with Commentaries from 1000 to 1100 is like an orderly night sky. The Greek text in two blocks looks like a constellation of dense strokes on ivory vellum, aligned precisely like stars measured with a ruler. Although here there is only ink and a small initial, I know that each gospel in this 428-folio codex opens with birds, mainly peacocks, and fountains of life. It is a portable cosmos created in a monastery in Constantinople.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks huge and super old, as if it had slept for a thousand years. It is open and you can see a bunch of thin yellowish pages squeezed on the left side. The page is creamy with little spots and has two little rectangles filled with funny handwritten letters in Greek in brown ink. At the top right there is a faded little drawing in red and blue and on the left an initial with decoration. I imagine someone writing nonstop with great care to avoid mistakes.
