What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is shown from above against a flat, dark gray background. Only the right-hand page, folio 332 recto, is fully visible; at the far left, a narrow strip of the facing page appears, cropped by the frame. The vellum is a warm, aged cream, darker and slightly wavy at the edges, with irregular contours, small spots, tiny holes and purple-gray stains concentrated in the upper right corner and near the right margin. The surface looks matte, thin and fragile, with the soft shadow of the spine in the gutter. Most of the page is filled with Greek handwriting in dark brown ink, arranged in blocks of small, rounded, tightly spaced letters, with shorter lines of commentary interwoven with the main text. Some initials and marks stand out in reddish ink, including larger letters at the beginnings of sections on the left. At the top there is a faded, scarcely legible heading and, in the upper right, handwritten numerals. At the bottom left another small number can be seen. There are no figures or large illustrations on this page: the visual rhythm comes from the density of the script, the blank margins and the signs of time and handling.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, look at the page as an object: its stains, uneven edges and the shadow of the spine speak to centuries of use. Then follow the two blocks of denser writing and notice how the red initials guide the eye like signposts. A closer look at the margins changes the reading: the small notes show that this was not only preserved, but studied.
ContextContexto
This is folio 332, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to about 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople. It is made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek. The source notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople; the author is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this folio looks austere, the same volume has 428 leaves, and each Gospel opens with an illuminated page with peacocks and fountains, so the ornament is concentrated at key thresholds in the book.

I pause at what time has left on this warm cream vellum. I see wavy and irregular edges, scattered tiny spots and those gray violet stains in the upper right corner and near the right margin, plus small holes that speak of fragility. The dark brown ink lives alongside reddish initials and marks that still stand out. I notice the soft shadow of the spine and the thin matte surface. It reminds me that every trace is part of the handling and care history of folio 332.

I look at this folio 332 as if it were a densely populated sky. The Greek calligraphy in brown ink forms compact blocks of small rounded letters, like tightly packed constellations, with shorter lines of commentary inserted within. The reddish initials are like guide stars marking the start of sections on the left. There are no large figures here, only rhythm, white margins and the aged cream of the vellum. I imagine a monk in Constantinople tracing this universe of text around the year 1000.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This book looks very old and it seems to have freckles. The page is cream colored with wobbly edges and dark little spots at the top right. Almost the whole page is full of tiny brown letters very close together that I cannot understand because they are in Greek, and some bigger red letters that pop out. You can see only one full page and a little bit of the other one. I like to imagine someone wrote it by hand a very long time ago and those spots are from using it so much.
