What you would seeLo que verías

An open medieval book is seen almost frontally, slightly angled, against a flat grey background. What dominates is a single page of aged vellum, a warm cream colour turning yellowish at the edges, with small dark spots, faint stains and an irregular surface that here and there looks softly worn. At the left, the thickness of the volume is clearly visible: dozens of stacked leaves, also cream and ochre-toned, slightly uneven, forming a dense block that gives the object weight and antiquity. A pale, translucent band runs vertically near the gutter, probably part of the modern mounting or conservation. The surface is covered in Greek handwriting in brown and reddish inks. At the top there is a short heading in red, accompanied by tiny marks and initials along the margins. Most of the page is written in a small, flowing, tightly packed minuscule, with abbreviated words and accents. In the middle, a passage breaks the rhythm: the letters become larger, darker, rounder and more separated, spread over about eight lines, as if another voice were speaking louder. Below it, the fine script returns. Reddish initial letters and modest symbols punctuate the text. The light is even and diffuse; there are no hard shadows, only the soft texture of skin prepared as vellum and the patient trace of the scribe's hand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the whole page and notice how much blank vellum breathing space is left around the writing, then move toward the centre. There, the hand widens, grows darker and more spaced out: it is not decoration for its own sake but a visual switch between two kinds of text. Finally, look along the edges for the small reddish initials that quietly mark where the voice changes.

ContextContexto

This is folio 348 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author and workshop. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves in Greek, written and decorated with ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, images of the fountain of life and salvation. On this particular page, however, there is no narrative scene: the main work is done by the script itself. Its sophistication suggests it was probably produced in a Constantinopolitan monastery; the exact monastery is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

This page looks plain compared with the illuminated openings described in the volume, yet it carries two levels of reading at once: the larger, darker script stands out from the smaller, finer hand, making the main text and its commentary distinguishable at a glance, centuries before modern typography.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what is almost invisible at first glance: the vellum. That warm cream that yellows at the edges is not paper, it is prepared skin, porous and alive. I see dark spots, worn areas and the dense block of stacked leaves on the left, all slightly uneven from time. I notice the translucent strip near the spine, the trace of our present-day conservation in dialogue with a hand from a thousand years ago. The two inks, brown and reddish, still hold firm.

This reminds me of looking at a night sky. The page is filled with tiny, tight, steady script, like a field of stars. Suddenly, in the center, eight lines open up with larger, darker, rounder letters, like a brighter constellation that organizes everything around it. Above, the heading in red is like a guide star. There are no pictures here, but the very rhythm of the ink makes me think of orbits and silences between each mark.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old little book someone wrote by hand with a lot of patience. The page is cookie-cream colored and has tiny spots. Almost all the writing is small and squeezed together, but in the middle there are lines with bigger, darker letters, as if they were saying hey, this is important! On the left you can see many little pages stacked like a giant sandwich. I imagine the monk writing quietly, very slowly, trying not to make a mistake.
