What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open folio from a thick bound volume viewed from slightly above, with the spine and fore-edge on the left. In the foreground the vellum page dominates, its color a warm yellowed ivory with a wavy, cockled surface and uneven, age-darkened edges. Brownish iron-gall ink covers most of the sheet in tightly spaced horizontal lines of medieval Greek minuscule, complete with ligatures, abbreviations and breathing marks. A few enlarged initials mark paragraph beginnings, offset slightly into the left margin and written in a darker brown. Scattered foxing and pale brown stains appear near the right margin and lower edge, and a thin translucent conservation strip runs vertically along the gutter. Light is soft and even, revealing the matte, slightly leathery texture of the parchment, its gentle creases and the layered thickness of hundreds of leaves visible at the left edge, their fore-edges uneven and softly yellowed. The background is a muted neutral gray, out of focus. No figural illumination appears on this leaf, only continuous handwritten text conveying a sense of careful, repetitive scribal labor.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the materiality of the parchment, noting its waviness, stains and soft sheen. Follow the small enlarged initials in the margin to see how they structure the dense text. Then consider the mass of leaves at the side, which reframes this single page as part of a monumental monastic undertaking.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 353 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries of 428 leaves with Greek texts, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. While this leaf is textual, each of the four Gospels in the volume opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author along with birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its high level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire, around 1000–1100. The scribe and illuminator are unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

In this Byzantine tradition, peacocks in the illuminated openings were understood as emblems of immortality because of the ancient belief that their flesh did not decay.

This folio makes me focus on the material. I see yellowed ivory vellum, rippled with age, with ochre humidity stains in the margins and at the bottom edge. The ink is reddish brown, dense and tightly packed, with slightly enlarged initials marking paragraphs. I notice the vertical conservation ribbon near the spine and the thick block of 428 leaves hinted in the background. It is a fragile testimony of use and preservation.

As an observer of long time, I think about this book made between 1000 and 1100 in Constantinople. Although this page shows only continuous text in medieval Greek, I know each gospel opens with illuminated borders with portraits, peacocks as a symbol of immortality and fountains of life. I imagine monks copying under even light, letter after letter, while outside the Byzantine Empire turned like an ordered sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant and very old book. Its page is wrinkled cream color and has little brown spots on the edges as if it got wet long ago. It is full of tiny brown letters very close together that I cannot understand because they are in Greek. I see some slightly bigger letters at the start of each section. I like to imagine how many leaves are inside, all stacked and yellowish, forming a huge block.
