What you would seeLo que verías

An open book rests against a dark gray, almost flat background, photographed from slightly above. The right-hand page fills most of the frame, while only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible at the left, with faint traces of writing showing through. The vellum is creamy, matte, and uneven, with yellowed edges, small brown spots, soft stains, and slight darkening where fingers likely touched it over centuries. The text, in Greek, is handwritten in brown ink in dense, orderly lines that alternate between larger, more spacious blocks and passages in a smaller, tighter hand. Several enlarged initials rise at the left of certain paragraphs, some in reddish ink and with small decorative touches in gold or dark tones that catch the light only subtly. Reddish letters also highlight beginnings and breaks, guiding the eye through the page. The margins are wide, especially at the bottom and outer edge, though the right side shows the stacked thickness of many leaves beneath. At the top right, handwritten numbers appear, one crossed out above a clearer 369. The page is not perfectly flat: it curves gently near the spine and its lower corner lifts almost imperceptibly.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the alternating blocks of larger and smaller script and notice how the page organizes two levels of reading. Then look for the enlarged initials and reddish letters that mark new sections. Finally, move to the upper right corner and the worn edges, where later handling has left its own record.

ContextContexto

This is folio 369, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000–1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the source. The volume contains 428 leaves with Greek text, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, along with birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. Its author is unknown, and its exact place of production is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the upper right corner, two page numbers coexist: one appears crossed out or overwritten above the clear number 369, a small trace of how the book was reorganized or catalogued over time.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the alternation between larger and smaller writing change the way we imagine this page being read aloud or studied?¿Cómo cambia la alternancia entre letra grande y letra pequeña la manera en que imaginamos la lectura en voz alta o el estudio de esta página?
  2. What can the stains, numbering, and wear tell us about the many hands that used this book after it was made?¿Qué nos pueden contar las manchas, la numeración y el desgaste sobre las muchas manos que usaron este libro después de su creación?
  3. When the decoration is restrained, as on this page, what role do color, spacing, and the initial letters play?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the cream-colored vellum with yellowish edges and those brownish spots that speak of centuries of use. You can see the darkening where fingers rested and how the leaf curves gently near the spine without lying completely flat. I am drawn to the brown ink in two letter sizes and the reddish initials with faint golden touches that barely catch the light. It is very careful monastic work, with wide margins and many stacked leaves that still breathe despite the passage of time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this folio like an orderly sky. The dense lines are like constellations of Greek text, with guiding stars in reddish ink marking pauses and beginnings. The enlarged initials are like quiet suns that help you find your way while reading. I love that at the top right there is a 369 with another crossed-out number above it, like corrected coordinates. And below, the wide margins are the empty space needed for the text to breathe, like the dark background between stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant book that has been open for a thousand years. I like that one page is fully visible and the other one only peeks out with a little stripe of letters. The leaf is cream colored with little brown dots as if sprinkles fell on it. There are big and small letters, and some painted in red that seem to say something important starts here. At the top there is a number 369 and another one crossed out, like when I make a mistake on homework. And you can tell many people touched it with their hands.

  1. #1

In the upper right corner of the visible page, what number is clearly read beneath another crossed-out one?

    HintPista

Look at the top right, on the cream vellum, for a handwritten number.

  2. #2

If you look closely at the letters that start some paragraphs, in what reddish color do several guiding initials appear?

    HintPista

They are not brown ink, they are brighter and mark pauses and beginnings.

  3. #3

On the right side of the open book, what can be distinguished by the thickness of many stacked leaves?

    HintPista

Look at the outer edge of the book, where the pages pile up one over another.
