The image shows an open bound volume photographed at a slight angle against a neutral gray background. In the foreground is the right-hand folio, made of ivory-yellowed vellum with wavy, time-stained edges; wrinkles, small abrasions and a slightly darker tone along the top and bottom margins are visible. The script fills most of the page, with dense lines of Greek minuscule in reddish-brown ink, executed with a fine pen. A few initial letters are larger and somewhat darker, marking paragraph openings. Near the lower left corner a faded larger initial in dark ink appears. In the upper right corner a pencil foliation is legible: 324 above and 380 below. To the left the sewn spine is visible, with binding threads and the shadow of the central gutter. The light is soft and even, without glare, revealing the fibrous, slightly translucent texture of the vellum and the faint show-through of ink from the other side of the leaf. The overall impression is one of age, fragility and meticulous scribal labor.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the overall rhythm of the tiny, dense handwriting, then move your eye to the margins to notice the aged vellum. Focus on the enlarged initials that structure the text and hint at how this sacred book was read and studied.
ContextContexto
According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 380 recto of a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to about 1000–1100, from Byzantium, Constantinople. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum with leather binding, and the volume comprises 428 leaves with texts in Greek. While this particular page shows only text, the book is noted for brilliantly illuminated opening pages for each Gospel, depicting the evangelist along with peacocks —symbols of immortality— and fountains of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The scribe and artist remain unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Even though this folio is plain text, the complete manuscript belongs to a Byzantine tradition in which Gospel texts were paired with extensive commentaries and lavish gold-illuminated frontispieces for each evangelist.

I keep looking at this folio 380 and thinking about its nearly thousand years of life. The yellowish ivory vellum is wavy, stained and abraded, yet it still holds the reddish brown ink. I am struck by the dense, even Greek script made with a fine pen, and how it shows through slightly on the other side. At the bottom left I can see that faded black initial. At the top right I notice the 324 and 380 in pencil, much more recent marks. On the left you can see the sewing of the spine, the thread that still holds the 428 folios together.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
This folio reminds me that long before telescopes, texts were copied with astronomical precision. Here there is ink and tempera on vellum, tight lines of Greek covering almost the whole parchment like orderly constellations. This is not one of the illuminated pages with gold and peacocks that this Book of Gospels is known for, it is just text from the eleventh century made in Constantinople. Even so, the soft light reveals the fibrous texture of the material and the central fold. It is a map of monastic patience that has traveled a thousand years to reach us.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This book looks very old and wrinkly, as if it had been stored away for a very long time. It is a yellowish cream color with brown stains on the edges. It has lots of tiny brown letters all close together that I cannot understand because they are in Greek. At the top it says 380 in pencil and at the bottom there is a bigger letter in black. You can see the little book open and on the left side you can see the little threads that sew it together. I imagine someone writing with a pen a very, very long time ago, without making even a tiny mistake.
