What you would seeLo que verías
A single open book fills almost the entire frame, seen straight on against a flat, dark gray background. Only the right-hand page is fully visible; a narrow sliver of the facing page appears at the left edge, also covered in writing. The page is vellum, a warm cream color that has yellowed unevenly with age, darker and slightly translucent at the edges and corners. Its surface looks thin, softly wrinkled, and a little wavy, especially along the bottom and right margins, where the stacked leaves beneath it are visible as a dense block of pale edges. Handwritten Greek text covers most of the page in neat, closely spaced lines of dark brown ink. In the middle, one passage is written larger and bolder, set apart from the smaller script above and below it. Several initials and isolated letters, on the left and in the right margin, are picked out in faded red-orange ink and are noticeably larger than the surrounding characters. Near the top, a line of red appears almost erased, with smudged traces of pigment and wear. In the upper right corner, a later hand has added a crossed-out mark and the number “383” in dark ink. Small stains, faint creases, a tiny dark speck near the lower center, and soft shadows in the gutter complete the sense of a fragile, heavily used object, evenly lit with no harsh reflections.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the shift from small, dense script to larger, bolder lines: that change in scale marks the structure of the text. Then look for the red initials and the letters standing in the margins, which guide a reader through commentary and Gospel. Finally, notice the wear, stains, and later numbering — this is not a pristine image, but a page meant to be handled and read.
ContextContexto
This is folio 383 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown maker. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains of life. This particular leaf is not one of those decorated openings, but a working text page with rubrication.

Curious detailDato curioso
The red ink used for headings and initials is called rubrication, from the Latin ruber, meaning red — a visual system for navigating a manuscript centuries before printed tables of contents.

If you look closely you will see this vellum is not a perfect surface. It has a warm cream tone yellowed unevenly, darker and slightly translucent at the edges and corners, with soft wrinkles and waviness along the lower and right margins. The dark brown ink of the Greek text is very tightly spaced, but at the center there is a passage in larger, bolder lettering. I am drawn to those faded orange-red initials and the almost erased line at the top: they are rubrics, fragile pigment that wears with handling. I also notice the small dark dot below, the stains and the wear on the compact block of stacked leaves.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
To me this folio is like an ordered sky. The lines in dark brown are constellations of tightly packed Greek writing, and at the center a different zone shines with larger letters, like a cluster standing out among smaller stars. The orange-red initials work as markers, beacons that help you navigate the page, even though today they are faded and one upper line is almost erased by time. It moves me to think this meticulous work was made in Constantinople around 1000–1100, and that the number 383 added later is like a later coordinate to avoid getting lost.

This book looks very old and well used, as if it had been read so many times. You can only see the right page clearly and a little strip of the left one. The leaf is cream colored, a bit wrinkly with darker edges, and at the bottom you can see the thick block of many leaves together. Everything is written in Greek with tiny brown letters very close together, but in the middle there are bigger letters and there are also bigger red letters on the sides. At the top right someone wrote 383 and crossed it a little. It has little stains and looks fragile.
