What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open book photographed from above, with almost the entire right-hand page visible and only a narrow strip of the left page, cut off by the frame. The vellum leaf fills most of the picture against a smooth, dark gray background. Its surface is cream-colored, irregular, and visibly aged: soft wrinkles run diagonally across it, with folds near the spine, faint stains, wavy edges, and corners rounded by use. In the upper right is a later annotation, apparently 391, drawn in pale pencil or ink, beside another blurred mark. The text, handwritten in Greek, is arranged in uneven blocks separated by blank spaces. The writing at the top is smaller, lighter, and faded; the central and lower blocks have larger, darker letters in brown ink with reddish tones. Some initials project into the left margin of each block, and certain words seem highlighted in a redder ink. Even without reading the language, one can sense the rhythm of dense lines, with abbreviations and linked strokes. Pale threads or marks appear along the left edge, where the page joins the volume. Below the text is a broad empty margin, barely stained, which gives the page breathing room and emphasizes its intimate scale: a book made to be held and read up close.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the whole page as an object, with its creases and wide lower margin, before trying to read it. Then compare the faded small writing at the top with the larger, darker blocks below, and notice how the initials projecting to the left help organize the text. That contrast reveals that this is not a uniform transcription, but a page designed to guide different kinds of reading.
ContextContexto
This is folio 390 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000–1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, Byzantium, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume contains 428 leaves with Greek texts, made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains of life. This particular page, however, shows no such decoration: it is a dense commentary page. The author's name is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: although the work is identified as folio 390, the upper right corner of this leaf bears a later, faintly written number that appears to read 391, a small reminder of the many hands that have catalogued the book over the centuries.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the experience of reading change when the text is surrounded by commentary in a different size and density of writing?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de lectura cuando el texto está rodeado por comentarios escritos con otro tamaño y otra densidad?
- What does the wear on the vellum—wrinkles, stains, and rounded corners—tell us about the life of this book that the text itself does not?¿Qué nos dice el desgaste de la vitela —arrugas, manchas y esquinas redondeadas— sobre la vida de este libro que el texto por sí solo no cuenta?
- Why might a book lavishly decorated at the opening of each Gospel keep most of its pages as restrained as this one?¿Por qué un libro decorado con tanto lujo al inicio de cada Evangelio mantendría la mayoría de sus páginas tan sobrias como esta?

I linger on the skin of this page, that cream-colored vellum with soft wrinkles and wavy edges that speak of a thousand years of use. I see faint stains, folds near the spine and corners rounded by hands that held it. The Greek text shows two rhythms: on top a small faded script, below darker blocks in brown with reddish touches, with initials jutting into the margin. Below there is an empty margin that lets the page breathe. And at the top right, that pencil note reading 391 reminds us that someone else counted it later.

I look at this page as if it were a night sky. The text blocks are constellations of brown and reddish ink on a cream background like an aged firmament. Some redder letters shine like guide stars and the initials sticking out are like planets marking the start of an orbit. The white spaces between blocks are the void between galaxies. And this folio photographed from above, with its wide serene lower margin, invites me to contemplate slowly, as when I observe the universe in silence and search for patterns in the density.

It looks like a little old book wrinkled like a vanilla cookie. It is open and you see a big page with lots of tiny letters in another language I do not understand, some lighter on top and some darker and reddish below. There are very tight lines and some letters stick out to the side as if they want to peek. You can see little stains and wrinkles like a used bedsheet. Below there is a lot of empty space with nothing written and at the top right there is a tiny number written in pencil. I want to touch it gently.
