What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows, from a slightly angled overhead view, an old book open on a dark, matte grey surface. It fills almost the entire frame: on the left, the thickness of dozens of leaves already turned is piled up, their edges yellowed, uneven, and darkened with age; on the right, in the foreground, lies the page under study, folio 396 verso. It is a broad sheet of cream vellum, with worn edges and slightly wavy corners, held near the spine by a pale, translucent vertical strip. Across the upper and central part of the page runs a dense block of handwritten Greek in brown ink, leaving wide empty margins, especially at the bottom and on the right. The lines are small, close together, and slightly slanted, with a hand-drawn, uneven rhythm. Some initials, much larger and in dark or reddish ink, mark new sections, and several phrases also stand out in a rusty red tone that breaks the monotony of the brown. On looking closely, one can see small dark spots like tiny burns or holes, faint stains, and areas where the ink has faded. The light is soft and even, emphasizing the matte, slightly rough texture of the vellum against the dense stack of leaves at the side.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the thickness of the leaves on the left, then move to the individual page on the right: the book is both an object and a surface for reading. Next, follow the shift from small, dense lines to the larger initials and reddish phrases; that rhythm marks the organization of the text. Finally, look closely at the dark spots and worn edges, which change the reading from one of perfect antiquity to one of prolonged use.

ContextContexto

This is folio 396 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. The Cleveland Museum of Art, which preserves it, reports that the bound volume has 428 leaves written in Greek, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — chiefly peacocks — and fountains. Its level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, although the author is unknown and no more precise origin is recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

In this book, according to the museum, peacocks were not mere decoration: in Byzantine Christian symbolism they represented the immortality of the soul, and the fountains at the openings of the Gospels evoked the fountain of life and salvation.

  1. What does it change in our reading to encounter a sacred text as a thick, worn physical object, rather than as words alone?¿Qué cambia en nuestra lectura cuando un texto sagrado se presenta como un objeto físico, grueso y gastado, y no solo como palabras?
  2. Why might a community have devoted so much costly material and hand labor to copying and commenting on texts it already knew?¿Por qué una comunidad dedicaría tanto material costoso y tanto trabajo manual a copiar y comentar textos que ya conocía?
  3. What stories can the stains, holes, and worn edges of a page tell that the written text does not?¿Qué historias pueden contar las manchas, los orificios y los bordes gastados de una página que el texto escrito no cuenta?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the creamy vellum with worn edges and gently rippled corners, and how soft even light reveals its matte, slightly rough texture. I notice the inks: the brown of the dense Greek script and the reddish phrases that structure the reading, plus the enlarged initials. I look at the yellowed edges of the thick stack of leaves on the left, the tiny dark spots and the pale translucent strip holding the folio near the spine, honest traces of time and careful use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like an ordered sky: a dense block of Greek writing in brown ink leaving wide empty margins below and to the right, like breathing space. The enlarged initials and phrases in reddish ink work as guide stars marking sections. The open book, with dozens of leaves stacked on the left, hints at a cosmos of 428 folios according to the record, made around 1000-1100 in Byzantium. It invites slow contemplation, following the small, slightly slanted lines.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This giant book looks very old and tired, with yellowed edges and little bent corners. The creamy leaf is full of tiny brown letters packed together that I cannot read because they are in Greek, but at the top there are bigger letters and other red ones popping out as if saying here something important begins! There is a lot of empty space on the sides. I like to imagine how many hands have opened it and how it sounds to turn one of those thick, rough leaves.
