What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is photographed from above against a plain dark gray background. It fills almost the entire frame; at the left only the edge of the preceding page is visible, and at the lower left a small fragment of the dark binding can be seen. The main page, folio 397 recto, is vellum in a yellowed ivory tone, with irregular edges, rounded corners, and slight undulations that reveal its age and flexibility. In the upper right corner are handwritten numbers, one of them crossed out. The text, in Greek, is handwritten in reddish-brown ink in compact lines forming blocks separated by blank spaces. Some opening letters are larger, in darker ink and with decorated strokes; a kappa stands out at the left of the first block, and several taus begin the following paragraphs. Beside certain initials are small circular dark-brown marks, like halos or stains left by time. The handwriting is minuscule, slanted, and fluid — hard to read for anyone who does not know the language, but visually it creates a rhythm like waves. Wide margins, especially at the bottom and right, frame the writing. The light is soft and even, without strong reflections, revealing the matte, slightly rough texture of the parchment. There are no figurative illustrations on this page: only text, initials, and the wear of the material.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the wide, empty margins and then move into the dense lines of writing, as if entering a quiet room. Notice the enlarged initials: they mark pauses and new sections. Finally, look at the crossed-out number in the upper corner — a small, later hand intervening in a medieval book.

ContextContexto

This is folio 397 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author and workshop. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page, however, is devoted almost entirely to text and commentary. Its exact scribe is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the book is famous for its illuminated Gospel openings with peacocks and fountains, this late page — 397 of 428 leaves — contains no figurative images at all: its decoration is reduced to enlarged initials and the rhythm of the handwriting.

I focus on the vellum itself, that yellowish ivory tone with its irregular edges and rounded corners. You can see the gentle warping of the parchment and its matte, slightly rough texture that has survived for more than nine hundred years. The ink is a reddish brown, with larger and darker initials like that kappa at the top. At the bottom left you can still glimpse the dark leather binding. I find it moving to see the small circular stains beside the letters and the crossed-out numbers at the top right, traces of time and handling.

What captivates me most is the rhythm of the Greek text. Those compact blocks of tiny, slanted, fluid calligraphy look like constellations aligned in rows, like waves or furrows in a field seen from above. There are no illustrations here, only the order of the cosmos set down in words. I imagine the scribe in Constantinople, around the year 1000, tracing each letter with monastic patience, leaving wide empty margins to the right and below, like the dark space that surrounds the stars.

It looks like a giant open book that someone photographed from above. The page is yellowish like a cookie and looks very old, with wobbly edges. There are lots of little brown letters all huddled together in blocks and some bigger letters at the start, as if they were the captain of the line. At the top right there are little handwritten numbers and one is crossed out, like when I make a mistake on my homework. It has no pictures, just letters, but I like counting the lines and spotting the little stains.
