What you would seeLo que verías
Seen from above, a thick bound volume rests on a smooth, dark gray surface visible only at the edges. The right-hand page fills most of the image; on the left, dozens of stacked leaves form a dense, uneven block with yellowed, slightly worn edges. The vellum is creamy, matte, and aged, with soft stains, faint creases, and a slightly irregular right edge. Greek handwriting in brown ink covers the page in three zones: a block of small, tight script at the top, larger and more widely spaced lettering at the center, and small script again at the bottom. The lines are dense but orderly, slanted slightly in places, with abbreviations, accents, and occasional corrections. A few larger initials open sections, especially on the left of the central block. In the margins are small symbols, letters, and faded marks, like reading notes, and near the lower center a long diagonal stroke cuts across the blank space. The light is even and soft, revealing the thinness of the parchment, the texture of the ink, and the book's considerable thickness. No people or illustrations appear: the page is almost entirely writing, calm and meticulous.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the larger script at the center and then notice how the smaller writing frames it above and below. Follow the margins: the small marks and initials guide the eye like signposts. That contrast in scale changes the page from a simple text into a layered conversation.
ContextContexto
This is folio 397, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written and decorated with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life. That level of refinement suggests a monastic workshop, although the author is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising observation: although the book is famed for its gold illumination, this folio has almost no decoration — its beauty comes from the rhythm of two sizes of Greek script and from small marginal signs.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

If you look closely, this cream-colored vellum tells its age: the yellowed edges, soft stains and the thickness of so many stacked leaves speak of almost a thousand years of history. The brown ink forms three distinct blocks, a central one with larger, airier letters and two denser ones above and below. I pause at the corrections, the larger initials and that diagonal stroke in the blank space: they are human traces, from the scribe and from those who read it later.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
To me, this page is like an orderly sky. At the top and bottom, the small, tight script is like distant stars, dense and countless; in the center, the larger letters breathe, like guiding constellations that organize the reading. The tiny marks in the margins look like notes from a careful observer. Although there is no gold or illuminated peacocks here, I imagine that in other folios of the book that shine does appear to mark important beginnings.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This book looks very thick and heavy, like a tower of cookie-colored leaves. The page is full of little brown letters that look like tiny ants walking in rows, some bigger in the middle and some smaller on top and bottom. I like the slightly wobbly edge and that little diagonal line someone left as if it were a secret. There are no pictures here, just letters, but it looks calm and very careful, as if someone wrote slowly for a long time.
