What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows, from above, a thick open book resting on a plain gray background. The right-hand page fills almost the entire frame; only a narrow strip of the left page is visible beside the spine, with the beginnings of a few lines of writing. The support is vellum in bone and cream tones, with slightly irregular edges, brownish stains, small marks of use, and a visible crease near the lower right corner. Its surface looks matte, thin, and slightly wavy, especially around the margins. The text, handwritten in Greek, is drawn mainly in sepia and reddish ink in a small, cursive, tightly connected script. In the upper half it forms a dense block of about sixteen lines, leaving generous blank margins. Toward the center, the rhythm changes: an initial projects into the left margin and several lines appear in larger, thicker, more widely spaced black letters, like a title or an emphasized section. Below it, another smaller block continues in reddish ink. In the upper right corner, two handwritten numbers can be read, '378' and '406.' Much of the lower half of the page remains empty, emphasizing the visual weight of the writing concentrated above.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the dense lines at the top, then look for the change of scale at the center, where larger, darker letters interrupt the flow. Notice the two numbers in the upper corner and the wide empty margin below: both reveal the page as an object that has been used, ordered, and preserved over time.

ContextContexto

This is folio 406 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author around 1000–1100 in Byzantium. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts, written and decorated with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the soul's immortality—and fountains of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably made in a monastery in Constantinople, although that origin is not certain. This particular page is primarily textual and has no visible figural illumination.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: the page bears two handwritten numbers in the upper right corner, '378' and '406,' a small trace of later systems of ordering or cataloguing layered over the medieval text.

I focus on what time has left on the vellum. That bone and cream tone is not flat: it shows brownish stains, signs of use, and a matte, slightly wavy surface that speaks of a thousand years of history. Notice the fold near the lower right corner and the irregular edges, so typical of animal parchment. The sepia and reddish ink, and that section with larger black letters protruding into the margin, reveal changes of hand and function. Leaving the entire lower half empty is also a deliberate choice in the use of space.

Seen from above, this folio looks like a night sky. The dense block of about sixteen lines in the upper half is like a compact constellation of sepia and reddish ink against the pale void of the vellum. Then those larger, spaced black letters appear, like brighter stars marking a new system. The numbers 378 and 406 in the corner are coordinates to avoid getting lost in this universe of 428 leaves. And that great empty lower half reminds me of the space between stars: silence that makes what is written shine.

It looks like someone left their giant homework open! You can see just a little of the left page and almost all of the right one, which is cookie-cream colored. At the top there are lots of tiny joined letters I cannot read because they are in Greek, and in the middle there are bigger black letters that seem to say hey, something important starts here! The bottom is empty, with nothing at all, as if they ran out of ink or wanted to leave space to draw. Did you see the two tiny numbers at the top, 378 and 406?
