The image shows an open book photographed from above on a dark, matte grey surface. It fills almost the entire frame; on the left only a narrow strip of the preceding page is visible, also covered in writing, while on the right the accumulated thickness of many leaves can be seen. The main page, folio 410 recto, is made of aged, creamy vellum with uneven edges, rounded corners, and a wrinkled texture that catches the light. Diagonal creases cross the upper and lower right areas, and there are faint stains, shadows, and a darker, worn patch near the bottom edge, like traces of prolonged use. The text, in Greek, is handwritten in brown and reddish ink. In the upper half the letters are larger and more widely spaced, over about ten lines; below, after a gap and a highlighted opening line, the writing becomes smaller, denser, and tightly packed into many more lines. A large initial projects to the left of the second block. Small marks, corrections, and symbols can be made out in the margins, along with two dark oval stains at mid-height. At the top right, in pencil or pale ink, reads '410', with another number crossed out above it. There are no figurative illustrations on this page: its visual power lies in the rhythm of the handwriting, the contrast between the two blocks, and the irregularities of the parchment.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice the contrast between the two blocks of writing: the larger, airier script above and the dense commentary below. Then look closely at the vellum — its creases, stains, and softened edges reveal centuries of handling. Finally, find the pencilled '410' at the top right; that small modern mark changes the page from a sacred text into a catalogued museum object.
ContextContexto
This is folio 410 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown maker in Byzantium, probably Constantinople, around 1000–1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume contains 428 leaves written in Greek, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a leather binding. Each Gospel in the book opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The scribe's name is not known; the sophistication of the work suggests, but does not prove, that it was made in a Constantinopolitan monastery. This particular page is a text page, not one of those illuminated openings.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this page is almost entirely plain text, the same volume's Gospel openings are richly illuminated with peacocks — in Byzantine symbolism, birds associated with the immortality of the soul.

I pause at what time has left on this aged cream vellum. I see the diagonal creases, the wrinkles catching the light, the faint stains and that darker area along the lower edge, a trace of hands turning the page over centuries. At the top the script is broad and calm, about ten lines in brown and reddish ink; below it becomes dense and tight, with a large initial marking the new section. I notice the two small oval spots and the corrections in the margin, because they tell the story of use.

This page has no gold or peacocks, yet it makes me think of the sky as text. At the top the large, spaced letters are like bright constellations, easy to spot. Below the commentary gathers like a dense star field that asks for closer attention. The large initial is like a guide star showing where to begin. The wrinkled vellum and the number 410 at the top right remind me that each folio is a coordinate within a universe of 428 leaves.

It looks like a very old and wrinkly book, as if it had been folded many times. It is creamy colored with little stains and two dark dots in the middle that look like little eyes. At the top the letters are big and spaced out, as if the writer wanted to breathe. Below they are tiny and very close together and there is a big letter at the start that sticks out. I like to imagine the scribe a thousand years ago writing slowly in Greek, and someone writing 410 at the top right so as not to get lost.
