The image shows an open book photographed slightly from above, with folio 413 recto filling most of the frame. In the foreground is a thick vellum leaf with uneven, yellowed edges darkened by age, spotted with brown stains from moisture and handling, especially near the top margin and gutter. The text is in Byzantine Greek written in reddish-brown ink, arranged in two blocks: at the top a short paragraph of three to four lines in slightly larger script; below a longer commentary in dense, tiny minuscule, about twenty-two lines. At the start of the commentary a single enlarged initial letter stands out, drawn in darker ink with reddish touches. The handwriting is fluid, with many ligatures and abbreviations and even line spacing. Soft, even lighting reveals the grainy, slightly cockled texture of the parchment and the way ink has settled into it. In the background, the opposite folio with similar text is glimpsed on the left, while a neutral gray support holds the volume on the right. In the upper right corner of the page a modern penciled foliation, 413, is visible. The scale suggests a medium-sized codex, portable for monastic reading, with a leather binding barely seen along the left edge.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by comparing the short upper text block with the denser commentary below. Then linger on the enlarged initial and on the stained, worn edges of the vellum that record a thousand years of handling. Finally notice how the tight hand and the penciled modern number tell the book’s long journey from scriptorium to museum case.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this piece comes from a Gospel Book with Commentaries from Byzantium, Constantinople, dated about 1000–1100. It is executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding, and comprises a bound volume of 428 leaves with texts in Greek. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. Each of the four gospels opens on a page with brilliantly illuminated borders showing the evangelist author, along with birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Folio 413 shown here is a text page without those borders, offering a clear view of the calligraphy and scholarly layout of the manuscript.

Curious detailDato curioso
While this folio looks plain, the same codex holds splendidly illuminated openings with gold, peacocks and fountains — Byzantine motifs in which the peacock stands for the soul’s immortality and the fountain for eternal life.

I focus on what the photo lets us almost touch: the thick vellum, yellowed with irregular edges and brownish humidity stains, especially at the top and near the spine. The reddish brown ink forms two blocks of Byzantine Greek text, three or four slightly larger lines on top and about twenty two tight lines of commentary below. That enlarged initial with touches of red marks the beginning. I notice the grainy and slightly wrinkled texture of the parchment, the pencil foliation 413 and the leather binding barely visible.

I see this folio 413 as an orderly sky for reading: a brief paragraph on top like a guiding constellation of three or four lines, below a dense field of about twenty two lines of commentary in fluid minuscule. The soft light reveals the vellum like a lunar surface with brownish stains from time and handling. I notice this folio does not show the illuminated headpieces with peacocks and fountains described for the opening of each gospel, here there is only continuous text, useful to imagine its everyday monastic use in Constantinople.

This open book looks very old and wrinkly, like a tortilla kept for a long time. Its creamy page has brownish spots from dampness and the edges are not even. At the top there are just a few lines with slightly bigger letters and below a lot, about twenty two very close lines in Greek. There is a big letter at the start with a bit of red that says here something begins! In the corner it says 413 in pencil and on the side you can peek at the other folio. It rests on a gray background.
