What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a thick book open, photographed at a slightly oblique angle against a neutral gray background, filling almost the entire frame. The visible folio is aged vellum in creamy yellowish tones, with irregular, darkened edges worn by time. The text, in Greek in reddish-brown ink, covers most of the page in dense, compact lines of Byzantine minuscule script. Two slightly enlarged and embellished initials mark paragraph beginnings along the left margin, in darker ink. The parchment displays stains, discolorations and small purplish speckles in the lower half, along with cockling and wrinkles from moisture, especially near the spine. On the left the thickness of the volume is visible: hundreds of overlapping leaves with gilded, worn edges. The lighting is diffuse and frontal, highlighting the matte, fibrous texture of the vellum and the faint sheen of the ink. There is no figural illumination on this page; it is sober, textual, and marked by the passage of time.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dense block of script, then locate the two discrete initials on the left margin. Linger on the stains and undulations of the vellum: they reveal its materiality and age. Finally consider the thickness of the book on the left to grasp its scale as a complete object.

ContextContexto

This page belongs to a Gospel Book with Commentaries of about 428 leaves with Greek texts, dated around 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. While this folio is mainly textual, the manuscript is known for each Gospel opening on a brilliantly illuminated page with borders showing the Evangelist portrait, birds such as peacocks —symbols of immortality— and fountains of life. It was made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Its level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a Constantinopolitan monastery. The maker remains unknown.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at what time has written onto the material itself. This creamy yellowish vellum shows darkened edges, humidity wrinkles near the spine and those purplish speckles on the lower half. The reddish brown Greek ink still holds strong and the two enlarged initials set the reading rhythm. The worn gilded edges reveal a volume of hundreds of layered leaves. There is no gold or figures here, only the honest trace of use, and as a conservator that deeply moves me.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher, I am drawn to the sobriety of this textual page. There are no peacocks or fountains of life here, just tight lines of Byzantine minuscule Greek on matte vellum. I picture monks in Constantinople around the year 1000 working by lamplight, copying in reddish brown ink a book of about 428 leaves. This folio is like a starless night, and I know from the record that each Gospel opening does burst with illumination. Pauses are also part of the book's cosmos.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book is huge and super old! It is open and you can see tons of golden pages stacked together. The page is creamy colored with little purplish stains at the bottom and tiny wrinkles near the middle. Everything is written in tiny little letters in another language which is Greek, with reddish brown ink. There are two slightly bigger letters on the left side starting a paragraph. There are no pictures here, just letters, but I imagine it is very heavy and has lived for a thousand years.
