What you would seeLo que verías

An open double-page spread from an accordion-style paper album in warm cream with a faintly aged, fibrous texture, divided by a central vertical fold. Against an empty background, five nude or half-nude male figures are sketched in fluid black ink, with washy diluted tones and occasional dense black accents. The brushwork is rapid, loose and deliberately grotesque, with bulging bellies, bald or scraggly heads, gaping mouths and twisted limbs. Scattered props are minimal: a small plate held aloft, a tiny cup, scattered morsels and what looks like a fallen flask. Upper left, a reclining man scratches his head with a mocking grin. Lower left, a dark-haired figure on all fours crawls forward, his hair rendered in a solid inky blot. On the right, three companions cluster: one offers a dish, one tilts his head back to drink, and one in the foreground, seen from behind with a hunched back and rounded buttocks, leans over food with concentrated hunger. Even, flat lighting emphasizes the calligraphic line and the soft staining of ink into the paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Scan the group from left to right as if following the drinkers' chatter. Notice how the ink shifts from a pale wash to a thick, almost dry stroke to suggest volume and movement. Focus on the hunched back in the immediate foreground: his solid form anchors the chaotic, drunken energy around him.

ContextContexto

This is a work by Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889), a Japanese painter active from the late Edo period (1615–1868) into the Meiji period (1868–1912), celebrated for expressive brushwork, satirical humor and subjects ranging from daily life to yōkai. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, the image comes from an accordion-style book of 26 double-leaves in ink and color on paper, dated to the mid- to late 1800s. The English title is Drinking Party from Sketch Album. The specific occasion is not documented, but such rapid studies are typical of his sketch albums where he practiced exaggerated expressions and poses. The volume was given by Anne and Anthony d'Offay in honor of Evan Turner.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at the creamy yellowish paper with visible fibers and the central fold that splits the double page of the accordion book. I am struck by how the diluted black ink leaves dense stains in the long hair and darker touches that highlight the aged texture. I notice the even light with no shadows that exposes each nervous and distorted stroke. I see the fallen bottle and the barely suggested plates, traces of Kyōsai's quick gesture in the mid nineteenth century. It is a fragile sketch that needs extremely careful conservation.

I see these five bodies as improvised constellations on a smooth cream colored paper sky with no background. Each naked figure traces a different orbit of drunkenness, with bulging bellies like moons and bald skulls that shine with no shadow. The central fold is like a meridian dividing the map into two hemispheres. The diluted black ink forms dense nebulae in the long hair and darker touches. With no setting or stars, only plates and a fallen bottle mark this small universe of nightly camaraderie and grotesque humor.

They look like five funny men all messy and making silly faces! One is lying down scratching his head, another is on all fours with super long black hair, and three are together drinking from a little cup and lifting a small plate. They have no clothes and big bellies and wobbly legs, drawn only with black ink as if someone made them really fast. The paper is yellowish cream and has a line in the middle because it is a book that folds. Even a bottle fell over, what a mess!
