What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen, photographed head-on against a very pale gray background, with two pages of cream-colored paper, slightly yellowed and marked by small stains, creases, and signs of age. The central fold divides the image into two nearly symmetrical halves, empty across their upper portions. In the lower third, straddling that fold, appears a small bird in profile, facing left, with a short pointed beak, a clearly marked dark eye, and a black band over its head. Its breast is pale and rounded; its back and wings combine gray washes with short black strokes, and its tail — extraordinarily long and narrow — projects diagonally toward the upper right corner like a single brushstroke that fades at the tip. The bird stands on low, diffuse forms suggesting rocks or the bank of a stream, made with soft-edged gray washes and a few dark dots. To the left, fine grasses grow, drawn with quick, irregular lines. There is no text, no seals, and no other animals. The light is even, without dramatic shadows, and the fibrous, fragile texture of the paper is perceptible, as is the worn edge of the leaves along the outer margins.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the vast emptiness of both pages, then let your eye drop to the small bird in the lower third. Follow its extremely long tail upward to the right, and notice how a single diagonal stroke energizes the whole spread. Finally, look at the faint grasses and rocks: just a few washes are enough to suggest a place.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this page belongs to *Azure-Winged Magpie from Ōkyo Picture Book*, an accordion-style folding book, woodblock printed with ink and color on paper, from Japan's Edo period (1615–1868). The source attributes it to Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795) and dates it to 1850, decades after his death, so it is probably a posthumous printing based on his drawings; the printer and exact place of production are not recorded in the data. Ōkyo is generally known for his direct observation of nature. The work is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection, given by Mrs. Kelvin Smith.

Curious detailDato curioso

A verifiable curiosity lies in the dates themselves: Ōkyo died in 1795, yet the book is dated 1850, 55 years later — a reminder that a master's drawings could go on being printed and circulated long after his death.

This cream paper, with its soft yellowish tone like #E9DEC6, speaks to me of time. I see its tiny stains, its fibers, and that central fold dividing the accordion book into two open pages. The gray ink forming the rocks leaves soft edges and very delicate washes. I worry about the worn edges of the sheets and how the bird's long tail crosses the fold without breaking. It is a fragile balance between image and support that I must protect.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Looking at this page I feel I see sky even though it is a book. That great empty space at the top on cream paper looks like a clear night, with no seals or text to interrupt it. And just below, the small bird with its very long tail stretching diagonally toward the upper right corner looks like a lone constellation or a comet crossing the low horizon of rocks and grasses. Ōkyo, with his observation of nature, leaves us space to breathe and to gaze as one watches stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The little bird is balancing! It has a super long tail that looks like a paint slide and it is standing right in the middle of the book, where it folds, as if it were on a swing. Its belly is round and light and it has a little black stripe on its head like a mask. Below there are spotted gray pebbles and to one side some skinny grasses made with quick little lines. Up top there is nothing, just empty paper, as if the bird had all the air to fly.
