What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is photographed from directly above, centered against a very pale gray, almost white background. Two cream-colored pages fill most of the frame, separated by a soft vertical shadow at the central fold. The paper looks aged and slightly uneven, with warm yellowed tones, faint stains, and edges that are not perfectly straight. On the right, the thickness of the remaining pages is visible as a stack of thin, beige leaves; a narrow glimpse of a bluish cover appears at the far edge. There are no pictures on this spread: the entire visual field is made of black Japanese calligraphy printed in vertical columns that are read from right to left. The brush-like strokes vary in weight, sometimes dense and dark, sometimes finer and more open, creating a quiet rhythm across both pages. Toward the lower ends of several columns, smaller, more compact clusters of characters interrupt the flow, like signatures or names set apart from the main text. The lighting is even and diffuse, with only a gentle shadow beneath the book. The overall scale feels intimate, like a volume made to be held close in the hands.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Let your eye travel from right to left, in the direction of the vertical columns, even if you cannot read them. Then move closer to the ends of the columns, where smaller groupings of characters break the rhythm. Finally, notice the gutter and the thickness of the closed pages: this is not a single sheet, but part of a bound volume meant to be handled.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although Hiroshige is best known today for his landscape prints, this late work shows his world through words: a book of light verse published in 1857, in the final year of his life recorded here—he died in 1858.

  1. How does a page change when we experience it as rhythm and texture rather than as readable language?¿Cómo cambia una página cuando la percibimos como ritmo y textura, y no como un texto que podemos leer?
  2. What might humorous or satirical poems reveal about everyday life in late Edo Japan that formal histories do not?¿Qué pueden revelar los poemas humorísticos o satíricos sobre la vida cotidiana del Japón de finales del periodo Edo que no cuentan las historias formales?

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my work table I see this book as a delicate body that has survived for almost two centuries . The creamy yellowish paper with faint spots and uneven edges speaks of the passage of time and of the woodblock that left black ink on its surface . I notice the central fold with its soft shadow and the thickness of the pages stacked on the right like a promise of more reading ahead . I am drawn to the rhythm of the vertical columns and the change in thickness of each brush-like stroke that reveals pressure and breath .

I look at these pages and think of constellations of ink on a creamy sky . The vertical columns move from right to left like ordered rows of stars that invite quiet contemplation . I do not know what the playful kyōka poems say because the record offers no transcription or translation but I imagine each small cluster of characters at the end is like the signature of someone who discovered a star . The even and diffused light over the book reminds me of the calm of watching the sky patiently with no rush to understand everything .

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks like a little open box full of small black sticks dancing in rows . There are many columns that go from top to bottom and are read the opposite way from how I read at school . The paper looks old with a cookie-like cream color and in the middle it has a small shadow where it folds . On one side you can see many thin sheets together and even a tiny blue piece of the cover . I like that it has no pictures only letters that look painted with a brush some thick and some very thin .
