What you would seeLo que verías

An open book rests at the center on a flat, light gray ground, photographed from slightly above and at a slight angle. Its two pages occupy almost the entire image. The paper is warm cream, aged, with yellowed edges, small spots, and a soft, fibrous texture. Both pages are filled with Japanese calligraphy in black ink, arranged in fluid, cursive vertical columns that are read from right to left. The strokes vary in thickness and pressure: some glide lightly, others turn darker and denser. The right page appears somewhat fuller; on the left there is more empty space around certain columns. Toward the bottom of both pages, smaller characters appear separated from the main verses, probably signatures or names. In the middle, the central fold sinks into a gentle shadow that marks the binding, while the fore-edge at right reveals a stack of thin, slightly uneven leaves one over another and a very faint trace of blue on the cover. The light is even and diffuse and casts a soft shadow beneath the volume. There is no illustration, figure, or landscape here: the whole visual force lies in the rhythm of the signs, the contrast between black ink and old paper, and the quiet feel of mass-produced print that still imitates handwriting.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, see it as an object rather than as a text: look at the fold, the edge of the leaves, and the shadow cast by the volume. Then move closer and notice how the columns vary in density and size, as if you could hear different voices taking turns. The small names near the bottom change the reading: these two apparently uniform pages gather many hands and many brief poems.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is Spread Fifteen from Volume Three of People of Japan in Light Verse (Kyōka), made in 1857 by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858). It is a woodblock-printed bound volume, with ink and color on paper, from Edo-period Japan (1615–1868), now in the Japanese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a gift of Kelvin Smith. Kyōka are short comic or satirical poems related to tanka. The specific content of these pages has not been transcribed in the source, so its exact subject is not known from these data alone; Hiroshige is known to the wider public chiefly for his landscape prints.

Curious detailDato curioso

Hiroshige died in 1858, only a year after this book was published, so this unassuming text-only spread comes from the very end of his life, far from the vivid landscapes for which he is best remembered.

What stops me first is the paper, that warm cream with yellowed edges and tiny age spots described in the record. I see two open pages filled with vertical columns of black ink calligraphy that shifts in pressure and thickness, reading from right to left. In the middle the fold casts a soft shadow and on the right the fore-edge shows slightly misaligned leaves. I am fascinated that although this is a woodblock printed book from 1857, part of the third volume of People of Japan in Light Verse, it keeps such a delicate, fibrous, handwritten look.

People of Japan in Light Verse.

For me this fifteenth opening is like an orderly sky. Against a light gray background floats an open book seen from above, and its two pages are constellations of black ink on aged cream paper. The vertical columns follow a rhythm, like orbits read from right to left, some denser and some lighter. There is no landscape or figure, just that contrast between ink and paper. We know from the record it is by Hiroshige in 1857, from the Edo period, and that these are kyōka, brief comic poems, although their exact subject here is not transcribed.

It looks like a magic open book floating in the air. It has two cookie-colored cream pages with lots of little black marks that are Japanese letters written from top to bottom. Some look very dark and others lighter, as if someone painted them with a brush. In the middle there is a little shadow where the book folds and on the right side you can see many thin pages stacked together. There are no pictures, just letters. I like counting the columns and seeing how they leave little air gaps between them, like a game of dancing lines.
