What you would seeLo que verías

An open double-page spread of a Japanese bound book is shown frontally against a neutral background. The paper is a warm, aged cream with soft wrinkles, gentle creases and faint foxing, especially along the edges. Each page is densely filled with vertical columns of Japanese calligraphy in black ink, running top to bottom and right to left, with handwritten brushstrokes of varying thickness. Across the lower third of both pages a horizontal band of pale to turquoise blue washes the paper in an uneven, faded gradient, darker at the bottom and dissolving upward, suggesting water, snow or sky. No figurative illustration is visible in this opening, only text and colour. The central gutter casts a slight shadow where the pages meet. The view is close and overhead, revealing the fibrous texture of the paper, tiny ink specks, and slight wear at the upper corners, which are a little creased and curled.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the two pages as a single visual field of text at first. Then move your eyes down to the blue wash and notice how the colour stains the paper without obscuring the writing. Look closely at the vertical rhythm of the characters and the aged texture that speaks of handling over time.

ContextContexto

This opening is from Verses for Winter and Spring, a woodblock printed book attributed to Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) dated 1850, late in the Edo period (1615–1868) in Japan. It was made with woodblock printing in ink and color on paper, a standard technique for illustrated books of the time. The volume belongs to the Japanese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source provides no detailed description, so the exact content of the poems is not recorded in the available data. It likely belongs to the common Edo genre of seasonal poetry collections that pair verse with subtle illustration.

Curious detailDato curioso

While Hiroshige is famous for landscape series such as The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, he also created many illustrated poetry books where colour was printed from separate woodblocks, as seen in the soft blue gradient here.

  1. How does the text feel different when seen as a visual pattern as well as words to be read?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de leer cuando el texto se presenta como bloque visual y no solo como mensaje?
  2. What mood does the pale blue band at the bottom evoke for you: cold, calm or continuity?¿Qué sensación te produce la franja azul bajo la escritura: calma, frío, continuidad?
  3. What does the worn, creased paper suggest about the book's history of use?¿Qué te dice el estado del papel sobre quiénes han tocado este libro antes?

I pause to look at the cream-colored paper, with its soft wrinkles and light stains that speak of time. I notice the slightly bent corners and the darker tone along the edges, traces of use and aging in this book from 1850. I observe the fibrous texture and the black ink of the vertical calligraphy, with strokes of varying thickness that reveal woodblock printing on paper. The degraded turquoise blue band also interests me: a color applied unevenly that makes me wonder how it has been preserved since the Edo period.

I look at this double page as if it were a sky. The blue band at the bottom, fading from intense turquoise to almost white, reminds me of a snowy horizon or water reflecting a winter sky. Above, the black calligraphy falls vertically like a rain of stars or constellations aligned from top to bottom. The book is from 1850, from the end of the Edo period, and although there are no figures here, the contrast between the dark text and the pale blue makes me think of seasons, of winter and spring named in the title, like cycles we observe in nature.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little old book open with lots of text I cannot read because it is written downwards and with Japanese letters. The paper is cookie cream color and looks a bit wrinkly at the edges. What I like most is the blue part at the bottom, as if someone painted with watercolor and the color faded as it went up. There are no drawings of people or animals, just black letters and that blue stripe that looks like water or snow. I wonder if the poems talk about playing in winter and then in spring.
