What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents the back cover of a Japanese bound book, seen frontally and showing clear signs of age. Rising from the water on the right center are two vertical wooden posts, one taller and thicker on the left and a shorter, slimmer one on the right; both are rendered with rough bark texture and dark grain, in muted browns and beige that suggest old, water-worn timber. At their base the water turns a vivid blue-green, with faint horizontal ripples indicating gentle surface movement. Behind and to the left of the posts grows a cluster of tall, slender reeds, drawn with delicate green and black strokes, some plumes bent as if by wind. The background is an aged cream-colored paper, stained, creased and torn at the edges, especially at the upper left corner and along the stitched spine marked by two black staples. The light is soft and even, without harsh shadows, enhancing the pale, watery palette. At the foot of the taller post a small rectangular red seal is visible, the artist’s signature mark. The overall composition is sparse and contemplative, balancing solid vertical forms against fragile natural lines.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two posts in the foreground and notice how their sturdy verticality opposes the horizontal ripples of the water. Then move to the slender reeds on the left and follow their delicate, calligraphic brushwork. Finally linger on the paper itself, its wrinkles and tears that reveal the object’s history as much as the printed image.

ContextContexto

This is the back cover of the woodblock-printed book Verses for Winter and Spring, made in 1850 by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), a leading master of ukiyo-e during Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868). It is a woodblock print in ink and color on paper, classified as a bound volume and housed in the Japanese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. While the source record offers no detailed description of the interior poems, the format corresponds to illustrated poetry anthologies that paired verses with seasonal landscapes. The precise meaning of the posts motif is not documented, but it likely evokes a wintry or riparian scene in keeping with the book’s seasonal theme.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the aged cream paper, with its wrinkles, stains and tears along the edges and on the spine bound with two black staples. Time has left its mark, but also value. I notice the two wooden piles with rough bark texture and dark grain in brown tones, looking damp, and the intense blue-green water around them with soft ripples. This wear is not just damage, it is memory. Preserving this balance between ink, paper and aging is our challenge so it can keep telling its story.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see these two piles as two solitary stars rising from a calm sea. One tall and thick on the left, another short and thin on the right, both steady in the blue-green water. Behind them, the slender reeds draw vertical lines like thin constellations pointing to the sky. Hiroshige's minimalist composition reminds me of a wintry horizon at dawn, silent and cold. The small red seal at the base would be our tiny Sun, a luminous signature in a watery and contemplative landscape.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two logs standing in the water, as if they were taking a cold bath! The big one is on the left and the little one on the right, and the water around them is blue-green with little waves. Behind there are long skinny plants in green that look like hairs combed by the wind. The paper looks old and wrinkly like my grandma's sheet. And below the big log there is a tiny red stamp, like a secret little sticker from the artist who made the drawing.
