What you would seeLo que verías
A single large ceramic jar stands centered against a smooth studio background that fades from almost black at the top to medium gray below, resting on a flat, light-gray surface with a soft shadow beneath it. The vessel fills most of the frame. It has a broad, rounded, almost swollen shoulder, a body that narrows gradually toward a small flat base, a short straight neck, and a slightly everted rim around a narrow mouth seen from just above. Its palette is earthy and uneven: burnt orange and reddish brown dominate the right shoulder, while beige, sand, and grayish olive cover the lower body, with a darker patch beneath the neck on the right. Several thin, pale greenish drips of glaze descend vertically from the neck over the shoulder. The surface looks rough, grainy, and pitted, speckled with tiny white and dark stones embedded in the clay, like coarse sand. A bright glossy highlight catches the upper front, contrasting with matte, drier areas. Faint vertical ridges run down the belly, and a fine, irregular crack is visible on the left side. The form feels heavy, sturdy, and handmade, with no painted decoration or handles.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the overall silhouette, like a broad shoulder tapering toward the base, and then move up to the small mouth. Follow the pale greenish drips that run down from the neck: they reveal how the glaze moved during firing. Finally, look closely at the speckled, rough skin — the contrast between the glossy areas and the dry, sandy patches is what gives the vessel its presence.
ContextContexto
This is a storage jar, or tsubo, made in Japan in the late 1400s, during the Muromachi period (1392–1573), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Japanese Art department. The maker is unknown. It is Shigaraki ware, stoneware with a natural ash glaze, and came to the museum as a gift from the collection of George Gund III. Shigaraki, in present-day Shiga Prefecture, is traditionally counted among Japan's six ancient kiln centers. Jars of this type were utilitarian storage vessels, although the specific contents or owner of this example are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The glaze was not applied by hand: during wood firing, ash floated through the kiln, settled on the hot clay, and melted into a glassy coating — which is why it is thicker on the shoulders and runs downward in drips.

I focus on the surface because that is where the story of the piece lives. I see that rough, grainy texture with little pits, with white and dark pebbles embedded like coarse sand. I am drawn to the thin vertical runs of pale green glaze dripping from the neck and how the intense shine on the front contrasts with dry matte areas. I also notice the fine irregular crack on the left and the faint vertical striations on the belly. It all speaks of natural ash-glazed stoneware, wood-fired, heavy and handmade, with no handles or painted decoration.

When I look at it I think of time and gravity. This wide, swollen-shouldered jar tapering to a small flat base feels like a contained planet. Its narrow mouth seen slightly from above is like a crater holding dark interior. The earthy tones on the right shoulder, burnt orange and reddish brown, against the beige and gray-green below, remind me of light and shadow on a lunar surface. Those thin vertical green drips are like trails, and the soft shadow under the base anchors it, as if it were floating yet heavy in the studio space.

It looks like a giant clay belly that puffed up a lot. I like that the top is burnt orange like toast and the bottom is beige with grayish green, with little spots and white and dark pebbles stuck on it. It has a short little neck and a tiny mouth where I cannot see well inside. Pale green drips run down from the neck like little trails and it shines a lot on the front but looks dry and scratchy elsewhere. It looks very heavy, like it would take two people to carry, and it has no handles to grab.
