What you would seeLo que verías
An irregular, roughly triangular ceramic sherd stands upright against a smooth gradient gray background. Its main face is coated in a vivid, glossy turquoise glaze, almost electric, broken only along the chipped edges where the matte, grainy, beige core is exposed. Painted over the blue in thin, dark purplish-black line are two stylized tilapia fish seen from above, their large round eyes, dotted scales, striped fins and forked tails clearly outlined. Delicate straight stems of papyrus or lotus cross between them, and at the top appears the profile of a long-beaked wading bird, likely a kingfisher, with speckled plumage bending down to catch a fish. The decoration is linear and economical, with overlapping forms that evoke movement through shallow water. Soft studio light creates a subtle highlight on the glaze and reveals tiny pits, faint crackle and small losses of enamel. In scale it reads as a sherd from a shallow bowl only a few inches across, yet its intense color and crisp naturalistic drawing feel lively and fresh, like a snapshot of marsh life.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the striking contrast between the luminous blue surface and the rough, pale broken edge that shows this is only a fragment. Follow the dark linear drawing to see how bird, fish and reeds intertwine as if moving through water. Look closely at the dotted scales and the large fish eye: that tiny detail turns simple lines into living creatures.
ContextContexto
This is a faience bowl fragment from New Kingdom Egypt, 18th Dynasty, dated to about 1479–1429 BCE, during the reign of Hatshepsut (c. 1479–1458 BCE) or Thutmose III (1479–1425 BCE), according to Cleveland Museum of Art data. The technique is blue faience with purple decoration, characteristic of so-called marsh bowls made for domestic, votive or funerary use. Its aquatic imagery — tilapia fish, wading birds and papyrus plants — refers to the Nile, fertility and regeneration. The maker is unknown, as is typical for this workshop production. The exact findspot is not recorded, but similar bowls come mostly from Theban domestic and tomb contexts.

Curious detailDato curioso
Marsh bowls were not made of ordinary pottery clay but of Egyptian faience, a quartz-paste ceramic with a self-glazing surface that fires to the brilliant turquoise blue Egyptians linked to water and rebirth.

I focus on the broken edge where the grainy beige paste shows beneath the intense turquoise glaze. That contrast tells me about the body and skin of the object. I notice the almost electric shine of the glaze, the tiny crackles and pores that reveal age and use. The blackish violet lines that draw the two tilapia fish and the stems are thin but firm, overlapping to create a sense of movement. It is a small fragile fragment that still keeps its vividness.

When I look at this blue I think of the Nile seen from above, as if the fragment were a small window onto the water. The two tilapia with their large circular eyes look like planets with orbits marked by dotted scales. The straight papyrus stems are meridians that organize space, and the leaning wading bird is a hunter constellation. This marsh bowl from the Eighteenth Dynasty turns aquatic life into a celestial map of fertility and renewal.

It looks like a tiny piece of a shiny pool! It is super bright turquoise blue and if you look closely you see two fish with round little eyes, split tails and dotted scales. There are sticks that are water plants and at the top a long beak bird trying to catch a fish. It is broken into a little triangle and along the edge you can see the beige inside. I like it because the fish look like they are swimming in circles.
