What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a smooth gradient background from dark charcoal at the top to pale gray below, a hand-thrown pottery jar dominates the frame. Its form is squat and globular, swelling at the midsection and tapering to a narrow, slightly pointed base and a short, wide, uneven neck with a chipped rim. The surface shows strong wheel marks as fine horizontal bands around the lower half, where the slip has worn away to reveal reddish-brown and dark umber clay beneath a patchy, off-white and beige wash on the upper shoulder. Two small, quickly brushed figures in black ink appear just below the neck on opposite sides: highly stylized mummy-form shawabtys with long wigs and faintly indicated details, minimal and almost calligraphic. Gentle studio lighting creates soft highlights on the shoulder and a subtle shadow beneath the vessel, emphasizing its earthy, granular texture, pitting, and ancient wear, including scuffs, stains, and discoloration. No lid is visible in this view despite the title. The jar reads as a modest, intimate funerary object, its scale suggesting something held in two hands rather than monumental.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the full rounded silhouette and the contrast between the dark, striated lower body and the lighter upper shoulder. Then look for the two tiny black shawabty drawings near the rim that reveal its purpose. Notice the potter's wheel lines and the worn patches that tell of age and everyday material made sacred.
ContextContexto
According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a Shawabty Jar with Lid dated to 1295–1069 BCE, from Egypt's New Kingdom, Dynasties 19–20. It is made of Nile silt ware and classified as funerary equipment in the Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art department. Such jars held shawabty figurines, servant figures meant to perform labor for the deceased in the afterlife. The maker is unknown. The museum credits the piece as a Gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust. Specific provenance or archaeological findspot is not given in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Nile silt ware was made from the fine alluvial mud left by the annual Nile flood, so this humble funerary jar shares its very substance with the fertile soil that sustained ancient Egyptian life.

I pause at what time has left half done. I see the whitish slip on the upper half, stained and eroded, and below it the bare reddish Nile silt with the potter’s wheel striations still visible. They are traces of the potter’s hand more than three thousand years ago. The chipped rim and reddish speckles tell me about use and burial, not about a display case. And those two shabtis painted in black ink, so quick and gestural, move me: a humble drawing for a funerary object meant to last forever.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I see it as a small planet. Its globular body and narrow base recall a contained orbit, a closed world with its own equator marked by the wheel lines. The background fading from dark to light gray makes me think of outer space around it, as if it were floating alone. Its date between 1295 and 1069 B.C. places me under another sky, that of the New Kingdom. Two shabtis painted in black are its only constellations, two mummy-shaped silhouettes guarding that humble and earthy universe of Nile silt.

It looks like a little clay belly with freckles. On top it is painted yellowish white and underneath it looks reddish and scratchy, with little lines like a snail shell. On its little neck there are two little black figures with wigs and beards, but just scribbled quickly, as if someone drew them fast before going out to play. Its little mouth is crooked and chipped. I imagine they kept tiny dolls inside to help a sleeping person work in the other world.
