What you would seeLo que verías
A globular ceramic jar with a wide, uneven mouth set against a soft gradient gray background. The bulbous body fills the frame, its rim chipped and worn to reveal reddish clay beneath a patchy, off-white slip that is cracked and flaking. Painted in thin black ink across the upper belly are two facing profile figures, rendered with economical, sketch-like strokes: elongated heads with a pronounced eye, a pointed chin or false beard, and simple lines for torso and shoulders. The pigment is faded and speckled, interspersed with brownish and ochre stains from age and burial. Even, diffused light models the volume, emphasizing fine horizontal wheel marks on the lower half and a gritty, porous texture with lumps, abrasions and areas where the white coating has fallen away. In the background, a faint shadow grounds the vessel, highlighting its handmade character and modest scale, likely about twenty to thirty centimeters tall, sized to be held with both hands.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the full, rounded silhouette and the worn rim to sense its age and function. Then focus on the two black profiles and see how a few lines suggest faces in conversation. Finally trace the wheel ridges and missing patches of slip that reveal more than three thousand years of history.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a shawabty jar with lid dated to 1295–1069 BCE, from Egypt’s New Kingdom, Dynasties 19 to 20. It is made of Nile silt ware and classified as Funerary Equipment. The maker is unknown. Such jars held shawabty figurines, symbolic servants meant to perform tasks for the deceased in the afterlife. The simple ink decoration is characteristic of non-elite funerary wares of the period. The original owner and exact findspot are not recorded, but the form and technique align securely with New Kingdom funerary practice.

Curious detailDato curioso
Shawabty jars could hold large sets of servant figures; some New Kingdom tombs have yielded more than three hundred shawabtys, one for each day of the year, to work for the owner in the afterlife.

If you look closely you will see what time has done to this Nile silt jar. The whitish slip is crackled, with chips along the rim where the reddish clay shows through. I notice the horizontal wheel marks on the bulging body and the ochre stains over the faded black pigment. It is a piece of funerary equipment from the New Kingdom, between 1295 and 1069 B.C., made to hold shabtis. Its quick, schematic painting points to a non-palatial workshop, practical and very human.

To me this jar feels like a small funerary universe. Its globular body recalls a handmade planet and its wide mouth is an orbit open to the afterlife. It was made between 1295 and 1069 B.C., in Dynasties 19 to 20, to hold shabtis, those symbolic servants meant to work for the deceased. The two black profile figures facing each other look like tiny constellations. We do not know who owned it, but its ritual function connects us to how Egyptians imagined eternity.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a little clay tummy with two tiny drawings staring at each other! It has black smudges and looks a bit faded, as if it was used a lot. It is a super old jar from Egypt, more than three thousand years old, and inside people kept little dolls called shabtis to help someone after they died. I like that it is medium sized, just right to hug with both hands, and that its rim is all chipped like a bitten cookie.
