What you would seeLo que verías

Seen from directly above on a white archival foam board, this is a conservator's layout of tiny archaeological fragments. Neatly arranged rows of small tubular beads in blue-green and turquoise stretch across the lower and right side, some forming long linear bands, others clustered in short dense groups. At the upper right, two rows of diamond-shaped or leaf-shaped pendants stand out, their glaze varied from bright teal to darker mottled green with browned edges. Near the top left lie four irregular, corroded fragments with coppery brown and green patina, one still bearing a small paper tag tied with string. Scattered around are handwritten labels on translucent tape marking each group, and a small clear zip bag near the center left holds a few loose beads with a handwritten note. The lighting is flat and even, with almost no shadow, revealing the matte, slightly porous texture of the faience, its faded glaze, tiny chips and subtle color shifts from age. The scale is minute — each bead only a few millimeters long — suggesting elaborate broad collars once worn, now reduced to an orderly field of remnants awaiting reassembly.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the long rows of beads at the bottom and on the right, then move to the pointed pendants at the top. Notice the small plastic bag and handwritten labels in the middle — they shift the reading from finished treasure to careful puzzle still being put back together.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is jewelry associated with Senbi, dated to about 1980–1801 BCE, within Egypt's Middle Kingdom (2040–1648 BCE). The medium is blue-to-turquoise faience, a glazed ceramic highly valued in ancient Egypt for its luminous color. No further description is provided in the source record, and no specific findspot is listed, so its original burial or archaeological context is not known from this data. The photograph likely shows the assemblage in a study or conservation state before reconstruction, a common presentation for disarticulated funerary adornments. It is part of the Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art collection.

Curious detailDato curioso

Egyptian faience is not pottery in the modern sense: it is made from crushed quartz that forms its own glossy glaze when fired, a self-glazing technique prized for imitating turquoise and lapis lazuli without using precious stone.

From my table I see a most delicate puzzle waiting for patience. On the white foam lie the tubular faience beads in bluish green and turquoise, aligned in rows as if someone had paused time. In the center there are handwritten labels and a little bag marked «neck?» with loose beads inside. I am moved by the matte, porous glaze with patina and darkened edges that speak of centuries underground. Everything is fragmented and disarticulated, ready to be studied before imagining how those broad collars once looked on the body.

I look at those blues and think of sky and water, which for the Egyptians meant life and eternity. The turquoise faience is not a gemstone, but glazed ceramic that imitates its color with chemistry and fire, and still shines like a tiny firmament in miniature. Here, seen from above, the beads look like constellations ordered on a white background like a star chart. It is amazing they have survived almost four thousand years, between 1980 and 1801 BCE, so we can study them today like observing the ancient light of a star.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant box of beads for making bracelets! On something white and spongy there are little piles of tiny blue and green tubes, all super small, and at the top right some diamond-shaped pendants that look like little candies. There are also little handwritten paper labels and a plastic bag with more beads. I imagine someone a very long time ago putting together a huge shiny necklace to look very fancy. Everything is scattered and mixed up, like when my necklace breaks and I have to re-string it all again with lots of patience.
