What you would seeLo que verías

A necklace arranged in an open oval against a dark gradient gray background, photographed from above as if floating in empty space. The main strand forms a nearly complete circle composed of dozens of barrel-shaped and cylindrical beads in burnt orange, terracotta, amber, honey yellow and pale peach, with smooth polished surfaces and a translucent vitreous shine. Each bead is small, only a few millimeters, and subtle variations in hue create a warm continuous rhythm. Along the outer edge hangs a shorter, lighter fringe: small circular white beads with a black dot and ring in the center that look like eyes, each individually suspended like a droplet on a fine thread. Their stark black-and-white pattern contrasts sharply with the orange strand. Light highlights the translucency of the glass and the soft silky opacity of carnelian. At the top the circle is interrupted, revealing the two open ends of the string with remnants of purple and gold cord from the clasp. The scale feels delicate, intimate jewelry meant to be worn close to the skin, with the thin string barely visible in the gaps between beads.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the full orange circle, then focus on the tiny white eye beads fringing the outer edge. Follow the warm color rhythm and notice how each eye has a slightly different black center. Finally look at the open ends at the top, which remind you this is an object made to be worn.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this necklace combines two groups of beads from different periods of Egypt: the barrel beads date to the Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, 1980–1801 BCE, and the eye beads to the New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, 1295–1186 BCE. It is made of glass and carnelian and belongs to the Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Art department. The maker is unknown. The current stringing is probably modern, assembling ancient elements into one piece, a common practice in collections. Its exact archaeological findspot and original wearer are not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Eye beads of glass like those on the fringe became popular in Egypt during the New Kingdom; they were valued as protective amulets against the evil eye and required skilled glassworking to create the layered dot pattern.

What fascinates me is the contrast of materials and times held on a single thread. I see the barrel beads in burnt orange, amber and honey tones, with the translucent vitreous shine of glass and the soft opaque warmth of carnelian. Below hang the small eye beads, white with their black ring, so graphic. I know they come from two distant moments, the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom, and that the current stringing is modern. The ends with purple and gold cord confirm it and make me think about how we care for ancient things today.

When I look at this oval floating on the dark background I think of an orbit. The orange and ochre beads are like tiny suns lined up, each with a slightly different shade that creates a warm continuous rhythm around the void. And then there are those white eyes with a black dot, like moons or miniature eclipses hanging outward. I know they are glass and carnelian from two dynasties far apart in time, now gathered in an almost complete circle that seems to slowly rotate in darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic necklace for a story. On top it has many shiny orange beads like honey and amber candies forming a circle that almost closes. Below hang little white eyes with a black dot that all look at you at the same time and feel a bit funny and a bit spooky. I like that the little eyes hang like fringe and that the necklace floats on the dark gray background. It looks delicate and tiny, as if it were made for someone very special and brave.
