What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, against a gradient background fading from light gray to black, a vertically positioned irregular stone disc is displayed as a lid. It fills almost the entire frame and is shown frontally, tilted slightly backward. Its outline is circular but imperfect, with chipped edges and a curved notch at the bottom, as if a fragment is missing or it had a fitting slot. The surface is rough, porous and heavily weathered, with whitish encrustations, darker veining from moisture and small black specks scattered, especially toward the lower right edge. The overall color is an earthy beige, between sand and warm gray, with tonal variations that reveal age and wear. Soft overhead lighting creates a halo around the object and casts a faint shadow beneath it, emphasizing its thickness and weight. There are no visible inscriptions or decoration. The texture conveys roughness, ancientness and contained fragility, like a humble object yet charged with funerary history.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the irregular silhouette and the lower notch, which hints at its practical use as a lid. Then linger on the stains, cracks and color shifts on the surface; each mark speaks of burial and time. Observe how the museum lighting isolates the object and makes it appear suspended, inviting you to imagine the complete jar it once covered.

I pause on what many would overlook: the chipped edge and that curved notch on the lower part. This limestone lid does not seek perfection, it shows its age. I look at the porous, rough surface, with whitish concretion stains and dark veins from moisture. It is fragile yet resilient, it has survived since the New Kingdom, between 1295 and 1069 B.C. Its humility moves me, it has no inscriptions or decoration, only the weight of time and the fulfilled function of protecting.

When I look at it straight on, I see a small eroded planet. That irregular limestone disc, with its earthy beige color between sand and warm gray, looks like a moon seen through a telescope, full of craters and black specks. Its imperfect outline and porous surface remind me of meteorites that have traveled for millennia. This lid, made for a shabti jar between the 19th and 20th dynasties, held figures for the afterlife. It is a humble satellite of the Egyptian funerary world, still spinning under soft overhead light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant stone cookie that is very old and all nibbled at the edge. It has a notch at the bottom as if someone took a big bite out of it. Its color is like beach sand, with little white and black spots all over, and it looks scratchy if you touch it. It has no little drawings or letters, it is plain but all chipped. I imagine it was the little lid of a jar that kept magical figurines to keep someone company on their journey after dying. It is like a wrinkly treasure!

Look carefully at the edge of the lid: what shape is the imperfection seen on the lower part of the disc?

    HintPista

Look at the lower outline, where the circle does not close perfectly and it seems a small interlocking piece is missing.

  2. #2

According to the record, what material is this lid made of and what did the jar it closed contain?

    HintPista

It is a light-colored porous stone, and inside there were small figures to serve the deceased in the afterlife.
