What you would seeLo que verías

A single vessel stands at the center of the image, photographed in a studio against a smooth background that fades from near-black at the top to dark gray at the surface below. The jar has a globular, almost spherical body, slightly tapered toward the top, with a short, narrow neck and a flat, flaring rim. It has no handles, spout, painted decoration, or inscription. Its color is a matte, uneven mix of pale beige, dusty pink, and light terracotta, darker and more reddish around the rim. Soft light from the upper left models the volume, brightens the left curve, and leaves a gentle shadow beneath the rounded base. The surface looks dry, grainy, and slightly rough, like unglazed earthenware. On close inspection there are fine scratches, shallow scrapes, small pits, paler patches, and scattered black specks, most visible on the left side and near the bottom. The symmetry is imperfect: the profile swells and narrows subtly, suggesting hand-finishing rather than industrial precision. No people, scale reference, or other objects appear, so its real size cannot be judged from the photograph alone.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette: an almost perfect sphere interrupted only by a small mouth. Then look closely at the rim and at the black specks and scratches on the left side and lower right. Those marks break the apparent simplicity and reveal a handmade surface marked by time.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a water jar made of marl clay by an unknown maker. It is dated to 1980–1801 BCE, during Dynasty 12 of Egypt's Middle Kingdom (2040–1648 BCE). It comes from Haraga, cemetery S, tomb 366, and was excavated in 1914. The museum received it as a gift from the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. The source provides no further description, so we do not know who used it, what exactly it contained, or how it was arranged inside the tomb.

Curious detailDato curioso

Its base is not flat but rounded, so as photographed it seems to balance on a single point: in use, a vessel of this shape probably needed a stand, a hollow, or a soft surface to remain upright.

I focus on the surface of this globular marl clay water jar. I see a matte and uneven color, ranging from pale beige and dusty pink to light terracotta, more reddish at the flat rim. I notice the grainy, dry and unglazed texture, with fine scratches, small pits and scattered black specks. It has no handles or painted decoration. Its imperfect symmetry and almost spherical body speak of handwork. It comes from Haraga, tomb 366, and was excavated in 1914.

This jar reminds me of a small planet photographed against the void. Its globular and almost spherical body floats on a dark background that shifts from near black to gray. It has no ornament, only light earthy tones that change with the soft light from the upper left. It is from the 12th Dynasty of the Middle Kingdom, between 1980 and 1801 BCE, long before our telescopes. Like a moon made of fired clay, it keeps the silence of a tomb in Haraga without revealing its real size.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a round clay belly, like a giant piggy bank with no slot. Its color is like strawberry cookie ice cream, grainy outside with little black spots. It has no ears to hold it and no little drawings, just a short little neck with an open mouth. It is alone in the photo on a dark background and I cannot tell if it is tiny like my cup or big like a watermelon. It comes from a very very old tomb in Egypt and was found more than a hundred years ago.
