What you would seeLo que verías

At the visual center hangs upside down a large white bird, a spoonbill, tied by its legs with a coarse, frayed rope; its broad wings spread open displaying white feathers tinged with soft grays and pale pink, its long flat bill points downward and its head hovers near the ground. To the left, also suspended, a hare with mottled brown-gray fur hangs vertically with ears drooping and forelegs outstretched, its elongated body occupies almost the full height of the canvas. Further left, two silvery fish hang by their gills from a thin string, their scales catching cool light and their pale bellies contrasting with the dark surround. At the upper right, a small dark bird flies with wings spread, as if just entering the scene, and at the lower right another dark bird pecks near the ground. In the foreground, on an indistinct earthy surface, rests a shallow dish with two glistening fish lying on green leaves. Strong directional light highlights the spoonbill and the fish on the plate, while the background fades into a velvety reddish gloom, nearly black at the edges. Textures shift from the downy softness of feathers to the coarse pelt of the hare and the wet sheen of fish scales. The whole arrangement suggests a game larder, orderly yet charged with a baroque tension between stillness and mortality.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large white bird hanging in the center and notice how its weight and pallor dominate the composition. Then move to the hare on the left and the hanging fish, and compare their textures with the shiny fish on the plate in the foreground. Finally observe the play of light and shadow that separates yet connects the animals, and spot the small bird in flight that breaks the stillness.

ContextContexto

This is an oil on canvas from the mid-1600s, probably made in Italy, possibly in Genoa, and still unattributed to a specific artist according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Scholars have considered Dutch, Spanish or Italian authorship, including the Dutch animal specialist Frans Snyders and the Spanish painter Alejandro de Loarte, but both were rejected on stylistic grounds. The vaguely rendered reddish background, the fluid brushwork especially in the fish, and the compositional emphasis on space through strong highlights and deep shadows point to an Italian, likely northern Italian, hand. It is a typical example of the Baroque game still life, a genre popular across Europe for displaying abundance and painterly skill. It belongs to the Holden Collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

The spoonbill is named for its distinctive spoon-shaped bill, here painted as a long dark form against white plumage to showcase the artist's ability to render contrasting surfaces.

I focus on how the things hang and how the light hits them. The white spoonbill in the center is tied by its legs with a thick rope and opens like a fan, its feathers show grey and pinkish touches that still feel soft. On the left the brown hare hangs vertically and its fur looks rough, almost bristly. Below, the dish with fish gleams over green leaves and the velvety reddish background has darkened at the edges, that is baroque chiaroscuro at work.

What I see reminds me of watching the night sky with a flashlight. The background is a reddish gloom almost black, like a sunset already faded, and suddenly bright spotlights appear on the white spoonbill and the silvery fish, as if they were constellations. The hanging hare on the left is a long still silhouette, while at the upper right a small dark bird flies across and another pecks near the ground, tiny movements in that painted night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Everything is hanging upside down and it looks like a strange little shop! In the middle there is a big white bird with a long spoon-like beak and wide open wings as if it wants to hug. On one side hangs a hare with floppy ears and it looks furry. There are also shiny fish, two hanging and two on a little plate with green leaves. Up above a tiny black bird is flying and another is on the ground eating. The light makes everything shine a lot.

  1. #1

Look carefully: how many fish appear in total, counting both the hanging ones and those on the plate?

    HintPista

Look to the left where some hang and then look down to the little dish in the foreground.

  2. #2

In the center hangs a very large white bird: what is its beak like?

    HintPista

Its name gives you a clue, it is like an elongated spoon.

  3. #3

Besides the hanging animals, what are the two small dark birds doing differently in the scene?

    HintPista

Search for one in the air and another near the ground, both on the right side.
